MK5 Golf Shark Fin Aerial to 6N2 Polo

Featured Replies

Hi There,

I've heard quite alot about doing this conversion to get rid of that nasty looking, really stupidly long aerial, and seen as i work for a VAG group, i went ahead and ordered a Shark Fin aerial from a MK5 Golf to fit on ma 6N2 Polo.

The fitment is perfect, sits flush and everything, but the cable connectors are different. The golf is of the new type aerial leads and the polo is of the old type, does anyone know of any after market adaptors to help me out, because ETKA can list any adaptors at all.

(for those who dont know, ETKA lists every VW part ever made)

Any help or advise would be greatful, or if anyone has done the mod before, a push in the right direction would always help. Thanks

I don't know much about this kinda thing, but i'll ask my tame ICE installer.

Very interested to see how this'll look though! Plz stick some pics up when possible!

Definatly, when i get the chance at work (hopefully tomorow) I will take the roof lining down and take some pics of the different connectors to show what I'm talking about.

BTW, my car is mostly standard, I'm just adding little things when i get the chance, this is one of the first (except for PS2 that i had lying around and a sub from my friends old car) :-D

Finally got pictures.

The wire on the left goes to the head unit, and the wire on the right comes from the MK5 golf shark fin aerial (will get part number, left the box at work) (just be aware, there are 6 types of mk5 golf shark fin aerial, due to some systems fitted with sat nav, DAB, and other options)

All i need to do now is find a connector that connects the 2 wires together, got a feeling i might have to start cutting co-ax cables :?

Anyone know of any adaptor cables that would work?? Any ideas would be helpful!!

Here is the actual aerial

Update:

Couldn't find the name of aerial connection from the old type aerial, no one seems to know.

The new MK5 aerial lead connector type is called "fakra" i think (can 't spell) and they have interchangable ends, so i looked through my bits box at work, found a male and female "fakra" end (will get part numbers soon) and had to splice the end of the original cable to a "fakra" type cable and now they fit perfectly.

Note: If you have ever stripped down an aerial wire for a normal household television, its the exact same, just on a smaller scale.

Only 1 problem now, not very good reception. Turns out, on the MK5 golf, there is an aerial booster attatched half way down the wiring of the aerial cable, because the shark fin style aerial is a lot shorter, therefore not getting a good signal, compared to the bee sting style. It picks up a couple of stations ok, but some are a bit fuzzy (not that i listen to radio much, just want it to work properly!) so will be ordering in an aerial booster from a MK5 golf soon and fitting that soon.

Here is a pic of it fitted, so much smaller, wondering if i should paint it! Yes or No? bare in mind, red car, black VW badges, soon to be black rims and GTI grills.

(not the best picture)

Been done before mate but there is a special wiring setup for it to work, i'll have to look for it. Here is a pic of one colour coded on a Mk5 Polo GTi.

looks smart, might treat my polo to one of these

I'd colour code it, keep that lil black rim. Alternatively you could leave it black and do your wing mirrors in gloss black to help the colour scheme

The black bit at the bottom has to be kept black, its a rubber seal to stop water coming into your car. And if you wanted to do wing mirrors, best to do matt black as the aerial comes in a plastic matt black finish as standard!

Also "polo96cl" it would help anyone else for the wiring set up, but i've already hacked-up the loom to make it work, all i need to do now it make the signal better! It has to be because of the lack of a booster.

Ahh yes I forgot about the aerial booster! You're right though, i'll ask my friend who has it on his and work out how to get it with the booster :)

Pop into halfords, goto the audio section, and look for the booster there. We sell it for £14.99, it plugs into the back of your headunit, with the other end into the aerial lead, and a separate 12v line source. (Just say something along the lines of a vw signal aerial booster, and hopefully you'll get someone who's knowledgeable there. Part is made by a company called autoleads)

Yes that is indeed the part; I've taken some pictures for you whilst I was at work today, to help clarify things a bit better:

Yeh I've seen it done before, you can buy models off of the bay that have a pre terminated back dated plug on the end making it fully compatable with the 6N2.Although with this same unit you'll need an aerial booster which can't be helped as the coil in the fin is so much smaller than standard type bee sting aerials.

I'd get it colour coded for sure just remove the black rubber grommet then re fit it after it's been sprayed.Looks better as if you don't get a perfect colour match the two colours are broken up.

so where do you buy the shark fin ariels from?

vw dealer?

i bought mine from a vw dealer, but like said above, i had to hack up the loom to make it work, but if they do one on the bay with a back dated connector, i'd go for that! (wish i did now  )

But thanks "TRUNKZ", god knows that autoleads aerial boosters are gonna be a hell of a lot cheaper than genuine vw parts, and do the exact same job! lol (i'll be poppin down there this weekend)

oh ok cool, how much did it cost you?

  • 2 weeks later...

That looks like the right one mate :)

looks sweet, recently got a cheap small aerial for my polo cos I think the previous owner of my car used to use the factory aeriel to play fetch with his dog. had a load of bite marks and low signal. got myself the aerial booster from ebay too. may get a shark fin to replace the small one.

Btw, thought I'd hijack this topic abit; I saw u driving through Wandsworth about a week ago? Recognized the shark fin ;)
