When all the snows gone, I'm planning on cleaning the the engine bay of my mk3, and somehow improving the appearnce of it

I cant do anything expensive/ major, just small cheap bits but still show us your pictures no matter how simple or flash they are, just generally intrested in seeing them and hearing your ideas/ advice, for example I used exhaust paint and resprayed my rusty air filter cover! Apart from that I've got a filty engine bay that hasnt been touched since the car left the showroom!!

Best thing that always makes a difference is just cleaning it and making everything look shiney, nice and cheap aswell.

Cleaned mostly with petrol and white spirit mixed together.

All the paint was just cheap hammerite etc from Wilkinson. Did the whole car for under £20 inc arches,suspension and rear axle.

as above bit of elbow grease does a lot but i have got a few goodies on mine

K+n filter

Polished 6n rocker cover

Polished oil filler cap

6n plastic cover cover all wires

Bit of red tape round the wire harneses to tidy it all up

and a good bit of autoglym super resin

Far from finished yet like strut brace next and mk3 golf air intake elbow

And get all the enginge painted the engine mounts clean the manifold cover up

I know this sounds like a silly nooby question, but what work can be done to the engine what wont affect the insurance?? Haha I'm to keeeen on improving my car and I havnt even got a license yet!

Change all your spark plugs and leads, that'll bring back some life.

Tbh start by concentrating on getting it to look mint, like these guys have! then start worrying about mods.

A clean engine is a happy engine!

A good clean, especially stuff like the washer bottle/expansion tank at the top of the bay.

Something shiny always looks good if not painted

A diy catch tank costs pennies and looks good, not like my shabby coke bottle!
