Starting to think that I'm spending a little to much on the mk3.

1000 for wheels

3600 for car

about 800ish maintaining it. Services, tyres e.t.c

700 for the car, about 2000 for bodywork, paint and full engine rebuild + service. So about 2700 i think so far :(

I've always had a rule that if the car is worth keeping i.e. a G40 then it shouldn't matter what you spend on it as it is a good little piece of motoring history.

But if its something just normal like a Mk3 1.05CL I'll try my best not to spend more than what I payed for the car in the first place.

General maintainance costs like servicing and tyres should be discarded though.

Altogether that 4 cars I own just now owe me £7850, not a hope in hell of making that back though haha.

Hmmm , well my mk3 was my first car and iv put it into the garage for a propper sorting out. including a full engine build, bodywork sorting out interior semi strip n clean up, chassis and suspension bracing and maintaining.

The engine build being for a 1100cc and under rally tourdament. Which is gonna be 1.3 ABD head with GT cam , custom inlet , HIF38 carb and custom air intake. Also a new clutch and a paint up.

Its not gonna cost that much and it will hopefully be a pretty tastey car when its done.

£160 Phil J kit

£100 Big brake

£70 Corrado interior

£30 Leather door cards

£150 Servicing

£260 wheels n rubber

Plus going turbo so bills will be going up

Plus mate i think abd gts are the dogs really my mates with all the usual mods saw an easy 110bhp, although i wouldnt run anything other than injection

these are the kind of questions that you should just avoid asking yourself

just before i sold my GT, i counted up how much id spent on it and it came to around £3500 not including insurance premiums or anything hahaa obviously if i had the benefit of hindsight i could of halved that amount and ended up with the same car though

why avoid them though? obviously everyone knows modding (properly) aint cheep. Its just interesting how much other people spend.

FAR too much. Imma do it in Euro's, too lazy to convert.

Car: 2750€(overpriced even back then, GAH so stupid)

Insurance: 600€

Two sets of tyres(winter+summer):500€

Maintance: 1400€

All in all, roughly 5250€. Or £4680. In 12 months. And it's still mostly boggo standard(ok, retrofitted leccy mirrors and 6n2 red rears).

I don't mind paying, but not when it's still a shit box at the end of the day.

hmm yeh i look at it that way. at the moment iv had to buy another car so i can take the polo off the road to propperly sort it out. And form getting in the new car ( Nissan micra ) for reliabilty and cheapness :-D it just seems so more boring than the polo , not just the speed. The polo is only a 1.05 but it certainly shifts twice as fast as a micra or any supermini like it. Cant wait till shes finished and sorted out :) :)

because for me, realising how much id spent was a bit of a wakeup call when for 3.5k i could have had an e36 m3 [obviously i couldnt insure at the time, but i could now] but instead, i had a 16yr old polo that my feet got wet when i drove in the rain, couldnt go over speed bumps or down roads with a lot of camber and spent 3/4 of its time as an expensive paper weight

its lots of fun pimping about in an old car that everyone looks at with the money spent i just couldnt justify spending more money on it. think i probably got just over a grand back for that GT but that was selling bits off it separatly then selling the car

i wont be modding anything again unless its worth modding I've decided now hence the 318is staying bog standard. which has provided much better value for money also in the 20k I've driven it so far. and never broken down once, and is faster, more comfortable, and goes sideways if youre violent with the old throttle and clutch

including the car as standard all the parts paint, bodywork, sets of wheels. soon to rise tho haha.

i remember ages ago robin totalled everything he had spent on his car including an approximation on fuel full service receipts cost of car etc etc etc and it was a ridiculous amount! 30k +

not much on the jetta, proper bargain basement car with pretty much every thing bought off mates for mates rates...

i totally agree with what Doug says about not spending much on a car unless its some thing a little special, that's why i got rid of my mk2 scirocco. the bills were adding up and it was still no where near how i wanted it and it was just a mk2 scirocco so i would never get much back on it. now i got a mk1 scirocco though i don't mind spending on it because it's some thing different and is more sort after so i won't loose out on as much when i do come to sell it.
