Basically I'm looking at getting a Mk2 Golf GTi..

But i still have a Polo mk3 GT stuck in the back of my head as i fell in love with the Mk3 at last year's Polo Show.

So i Have around £1200-£1500 to spend, that either meens the golf or i could buy the polo GT and still have some spare left over for a bike carb conversion.

So the question is. What is faster, GT on bike carbs, or the golf mk2 gti 1.8 8v? I'm guessing they are going to be around the same as the polo is lighter?

I know the GTi's are 112bhp standard, i would be getting the 3door, weighing in at 910kg.

But cannot find the wieght of the Polo Mk3 GT. and what bhp are they running on bike carbs?

You'll probably get a lot more for your money with a Golf, not to mention more choice. The Golf is probably a bit quicker too.

id go for the golf

people will only call the polo gt a golf anyway

i think you would have to tune a GT pretty hard to get it any where near a GTI and even then as so as you get to a bend the golf would eat it alive.

that said i'd rather have a GT running carbs than a 8v GTI even though the golf is a much better car, the polo would sound fantastic and it's not always about what is the better car...

if it was a 16v golf though that would be a different story altogether.

you wouldnt have to spend your whole budget on getting a GTI, then just do a few choice mods and you'll end up with a better car

my old GT was rapid for what it was and i reckon it could stay close to an 8v gti, but as mclovin says the golf will probably handle better so overall a better bet

or you could just man up and buy a 16v

The Mk2 GTI has got to be the best car VW have ever made... but I like my GT loads more than any of the golfs I've had.

I'd go for a 3 door Mk2

I would only ever get a 3dr, 5door suck big hairy balls. no offence to all you more doors more whores lovers.

Yeah i've seen so many nice examples of them.

I was looking at Mk3 polos first, but just keep seeing mk2 Golf popping up i have to have one.

The Golf has better brakes, better handling and better build quality. Don't get me wrong I love my Mk3 polo's but the Golf is the cooler car out of the box.

Wait till your 21 instead of wasting the money on a 8v.

Cant afford to maintain a G40 if I'm honest, as much as i would like to, i would only be shooting myself in the foot..

I Can barely afford to insure myself for a 8v let alone a 16v. they are trying to rape me 1500 for 8v as it is.. might just have to keep the 8v for a while.

Okay well another question, I've got 1years no claims as a named driver, and 1years no claims on my own insurance, so i guess it means i only put down 1years no claims, then ring them up it's worth mentioning the 1year's named driver no claims, or just put 2years?
