8v mk2 is a big step all round from a gt. then a 16v is a step up again. i like em all though.

fuck it, buy yourself an 8V, enjoy it for a couple of years, get it pristine and then when you get bored and want more power, man up about the whole thing and just rip out the engine and put a VR6 in.

If you have a VR6, you probably wouldn't want a G40.

Get rid of the manifold and put six bike carbs on the front. Cant believe I've not seen this happen yet. Tell someone to get on with it.

You can build a decent mk2 VR6 for well well well under a grand if you know what you're doing, that's starting from scratch.

But i reckon the R36 is a good balance in the biggest/power question as obviously if its about power spending 1000's on a turbo/NOS will make the biggest bhp figures haha

Not sure tbh when i was last there they had 7 or 8 engines already waiting for people.

I wouldn't bother with the outlay for R36 lump in a mk2 Golf. In a few years when this engine becomes cheaper, it will dick on all the current power mk2 golf conversions.

Sounds as good as a VR too imho.

The 4.2 V8 goes in,transversely. Not entirely OEM but it goes in with little modification to the bay,with standard Audi unit and a standard box.

the R36 has gone into at least one R32 and makes VERY good power N/A... with a supercharger it would be a great swap, however i would want it in a rallye or synchro with hadlex...

VR6 or 20vt.

amazing noise or tuneablility. the 20v physically fits in better but is more wiring to do than a vr...

edit - oh, and the TFSI engines eat top ends when tuned past stage one last time i spoke to him, ne of the guys at the phirm was rebuilding an s3 top end that burnt itself out. its to do with the direct injection not lubricating the valves enough or something.

ever done the belts an chains on a mk2 VR with an un-notched chassis leg? its a squeeeeeeeeze in that bay, but worth it, shoulda been an option for late 90 spec ones.

to do the chains in the bay is pure madness, it's a hell of a lot easier with the engine out, can't see how not doing the leg would help this one.

As for the belt, if you forget to notch the leg, you deserve all you get when you come to do so.

the only reason i would ever put a VR6 in a mk2 is for the noise, for every thing else there's the ABF.

I've had an ABF in a mk2 and it's fast, it's revvy and it's a lot of fun but it doesn't compare to a VR6.
