to do the chains in the bay is pure madness, it's a hell of a lot easier with the engine out, can't see how not doing the leg would help this one.

As for the belt, if you forget to notch the leg, you deserve all you get when you come to do so.

 people do tho... altho no need for notching if building a VR rallye, they come factory shaped for some reason?

a g60 in a mk2 is just about right. the trouble with the VR is too much weight at the front.

bullshit.

people use the wrong suspension, and dont set the car up properly...

So rich, the diffrence between 9A and ABF? you did say something about it, but not alot, you kinda left me hanging there

i thought the main difference was the fuelling?

KR = mechanical, ABF = EFI and 9a was in the middle, like digipantz?

drewbar (on here) has a 9a bottom end on a KR with KR fuelling, and its a hoot! makes me want a mk2 again... nothing till 3k then NOIIIIIISE!

but i'd be very tempted by a 20vt or a vr...

i dont see how the same sort of people consider both 20VT and a 16v.. Such different ideas.

Don't like turbos myself, nothing like N/A

9a are rated as 136hp when they are in passats and corrados because those cars came equiped with Cats and DIgi management with ultra lame cams for emmissions reasons. a 9a on k-jet is good for 140+ho and 20+ Lbs torque which is what makes the big difference compared with a 1.8 KR

A good combination is a 9a bottom end with a kr head and cams running on k-jet which is by far the easiest and cheapest way to 160+HP and with a decent P&P head and 4branch 175+ and it is possible to get VERY close to 200hp which is the very max for K-jets. Individual throttle bodies like Jenveys can see 2.0 16v over 200HP :-D

man.. i wish i understood what all the cool people were talking about :retard:

whatever you are saying though, it sounds like Golfs are hella fun..

Then again, there is the 6A to bring into this, no real benefits, transversely mounted but can easily be changed, just put a different oil pump in it and you have what is essentially a 9a bottom end with more oil ports. :)

Mine will now be 9A bottom end, KR head, proper inlet which has almost zero loss in flow against the head, TSR 4 branch and either 40's or 45's.

1300 brakes are great, but think i'll go with G60's... :|

go with the 1.3's, get the adrenaline flowing.

lightest mk2 ever?

As said by kerrly, the 9a only produces 136bhp. You need KR cams or even better ABF cams, and run it on k-jet.

Drilling the air box might help a bit, but there are better ways to modify the abf air box. There is a big thread on this subject on cgti in the 16v section.

As for the original question, i would go for the golf gti. Try to get a K-jet one.

But i would try and get a mk1 gti if it is performance that your after. And then when you can afford it do a abf 16v conversion.

Thats what I've done, It is very fast. 170bhp in a 850kg car.

I like the induction noise and OEM nature of a 16v in a MK2, but for power, a BAM or AMK will see nigh on 300bhp with a remap, induction, exhaust and FMIC...

For sheer power and ease of fitment, nothing VAG beats the 20vt, but for power and noise the 6cyl lumps come close...

^^ x2 but if you want to spend x amount for a noise and sacrificing the better engine for sound that your choice.

i love the look of the mk2 golf. you say all these diffrent engines, it meens nothing to me, i dont know alot, well anything really about the mk2 Golf's.

And its just the 8v is all i can get insured on at the moment, they want another £600-£700 ontop of the 8v for the 16v on insurance ayear, and fuck that..

"Try to get a K-jet one", what does this meen, how do i go about it? they come on the 8v's?..this is how little i know...

k jet is the earlier mechanical injection system, i think they're referring more to the 16v, iirc k-jet was superseeded by digifant (in 87?) which is basically EFI electronic fuel injection, for the 8v i prefer the digifant set up for reliability and not loads of pipes all over the bay and bulky metering head.

the early mk2 8v gti's came with k-jet. Yea its just the injection system

K-jet also comes on mk1 gti and mk2 gti 16v.

I have no experiance of digifant but most people seem to prefere the k-jet.

Engine codes: KR 1.8 16v= mk2 golf 16v

9a 2.0 16v= Corrado 16v, and various other cars passats and audis i think

ABF 2.0 16v= Mk3 golf gti 16v, mk1 seat ibiza cupra 16v

sorry i was talking about the 8v, i converted my old DX 1.8 mk1 gti to run efi as i just wasn't getting on with k-jet issues + i could chip the digifant ecu.

Olly

/\ I also had issues with my K-jet on my mk1 gti. I ended up replacing almost everything until i found that it had faulty injectors. I almost switched to twin webers but I'm glad i didnt.

oh yeah. mk2 golf beats polo gt in everyway

oh yeah. mk2 golf beats polo gt in everyway

And the best thing is if you own a GT already, sold mine for £1600 and bought my Golf for £1000 haha

I went from poverty spec Polo to a Golf with c/l,e/w, electric sunroof, PAS, leather interior :-D

If you want an 8v GTI get the K-Jet injected one as stated by someone else above. They're a shade quicker than the digipants ones.

They are, but some of it is down to the k-jet being on the early ones with less options i.e only central locking. The newer the car the more extras they strapped to it, naturally big bumpers, PAS etc all weighs more kg's.

Indeed but the K-Jet cars pull harder and faster than the 87-88 Digifant cars of the same small bumper spec but they do use a bit more fuel.

The later big bumper cars are proper lardy with all the impact bars, soundproofing, PAS etc.

nick

So if you want big bumper get a 16v to drag its ass around? haha

I'd go for the digipants over the k-jet anyday in an 8v.

I even contemplated doing a digipants 2 conversion on a 16v I had once.

If I was getting a mk2, I wouldn't think about anything other than a GTI, injection is the only way to go. Couldn't be doing with this carb icing nonsense & not starting now and again.

As for the chuck a 20V in it bit above, get some imagination. You'll always get a better experience out of driving something NA tuned anyways. My mate used to have a Kr which was tuned by BRM in the early 90's. It kicked out 177 BHP, but it doesn't end there. It was stupidly revvy, unbelievable torque and would quite easily whip a lot of faster cars. Not just your generic crap, but scoobies, skylines and the likes of big electrically tuned turbo'd cars.

NA ftw.

Out of interest why?

Nick

because after having a few K-jet cars, It's just an arse to set up if anything goes wrong.

Also, I like to be different.

They replaced the K-jet with Digipants for a reason.
