I need help, i have around a £600 budget and need a new car, i needs to be economical and ok on insurance, currently and for the last year and few month i've been going around in my mk3 astra 1.4 ls, the problem is 22mpg. not to worried about how the next car handles. as i've had fun in even the astra. the next car must be reliable. not to worried about fun as thats what the bike is for! any ideas let me know

I would recomend a 6n. I got my one for £700 with 60k on the clock. The 1.4 8v is insurance group 5 and decent enough on consumption.

A polo will probably be more fun than your astra, well a mk2 or mk3 would be anyway :-D

And that's my recommendation, you could get a very tidy mk3 1.3 spi (for example) for your budget. I can get 50 mpg from mine if I drive carefully, they are reliable and fairly nippy for what they are.

I agree totally with that, a 1.3 spi would be good imo

Welcome. I've driven an astra like you had (gf's mums ) and it was pants!

A 1.3 SPI is a good choice. Even a 1.3 MPI NZ engine. A quick chip change will make it feel better

I'd have a tidy Mk3 over a cheap 6n for a first car on that budget personally..

6n 1.0L are group 3 insurance and mine doesnt rely struggle with the car full of people, not the best acceleration though...
