Hey everyone,

I have what I believe to be a 6N2 Polo (X Reg 2000). I sometimes get confused with the model names but this is the Polo that was only available from 2000 to 2002 - 6N2 right?

Anyway, I want to install a CD Player under the factory fitted Radio/Casette player (there is a cubby hole ready for CD Player installation). Preferably I want an offical VW CD Player (any for sale?) as I presume it will be easier to install. My question is, what VW CD player do I need? Can anyone provide me with a model number and advise me where to buy one from? Installation information would also be greatly appreciated.

I have seen these on ebay but they appear to be for the 2002-onwards models...will they fit the 6N2?

Hi Jay,

Tell me, why don't you remove the existing head unit (you'll need some release keys Halfords et al) and replace with a modern unit that plays CDs, MP3 etc? You could even get a matched CD autochanger and fit that too!

There are some very nice models with good sound, and with careful consideration can be chosen to match the interior illumination and preserve the oem feel.

The vast majority of new headunits will connect directly into the ISO plugs on the existing loom. So, it really is plug and play!

Or is it that you have a lot of cassettes?

^ what he said, x2. I got a kenwood unit off t'internet as soon as i got my 6n2, slotted straight in, sounds great and is real easy to stick new components onto.

There are plenty of head units with cd changers out there, and if you shop around then you should be able to get yourself a bargain

In all honesty, I am totally clueless when it comes to ICE. Ideally, I would like a connection/dock for my iPhone but I presume this would cost a fortune...right? Are there any resonably priced and easy to install iPhone docks around for the 6N2?

lol - I love cassettes...bring back the Sony Walkman...kill the iPod! Joking aside, the last time I listened to a cassette was back in 1994 when Chaka Demus and Pliers released the hit 'Tease Me' lol...found the old cassette when clearing my house the other day!

My reasoning behing the official VW CD player was that I have a gaping cubby hole sitting below my radio/cassette and I presume the official CD player will fit precisely into the whole with no fuss. I really do not have the exerience or money to find an aftermarket equivalent unless it brings huge benefits e.g. iPhone functionality. How much should I pay for the VW CD player? What model would I need for a 6N2 (would the ebay suggestions in my original post fit?)? Does it require an activation code?

In summary, I would greatly appreciate it if someone could recommend a reasonably priced aftermarket system with iPhone functionality or just advise me as to where I can find the correct (for 6N2) VW CD player for the best price?

p.s. just taken my car to the garage because the bakes were locking...mechanic said the handbrake cable had gone and caused the problem. Need new handbrake cable and back brake pads...any idea how much this will cost? anyone had the same problem?

You say you want be able to dock your ipod the set up I have consist of an Itrip which about £30 for a belkin one works a treat! and, if £30 seems steap you can get a tape to jack for the Ipod front tescos for £12 its not the best solution but its better than nothing!

Also have the standard CD player not that it works atm aha

but i've got to admit it looks better than some CD players out there that are huge and ruing the inside of the car

1) Yeah it is the same CD player

2) I use the Ipod touch so i couldn't see why it wouldn't work

3) I'm not sure where you can get one from as mine came in the car when i bought it i wouldnt buy one from a VW dealership i can imagine it being very pricey just try eBay or see if you local scrappies have any polo's in with a CD player long shot i know but you never know what you'll find!

Luckily what your after is for sale in the ice for sale section on club polo! Infact Its a in dash genuine vw 6cd changer! and it comes with the original stereo aswell which you already have. Will fit straight in your car and looks much better than an aftermarket unit. You could sell the original stereo for about £30 on ebay aswell. Hes asking for £120 for both which isnt bad but if you can get them both for £100 your laughing. Sell the stereo for about £30 yourself and you will have a in dash vw 6cd changer for about £70. The hole/tray you are on about below your current stereo pulls out (with force) and you stick the cd changer straight in its place and it will come with a wire that fits straight into the back of your original stereo:)

Or get one of these: Kenwood DPX503U - Double DIN (so it'll fill the whole gap), CD, USB etc......£160 if you shop around.

I'm toying with the idea myself, however I'm not certain about losing the OEM look yet (although the fascia does light up blue).

mboyle - The link you provided shows a Sony CD Changer...is this the officical VW CD changer (sorry for the question but my browser is not loading the pictures!)? Do I need keys to remove the cubby hole/shelf or can it be safely removed with force? Is there anyway I can connect my iPhone to this CD changer? £120 does seem steep so I will try and negotiate him down - thanks again!

Can someone please explain Gamma, Beta, DIN, Double DIN, etc. to me (I am completely clueless!)?

Bobby - Does the Kenwood have iPhone functionality? In this day and age there must be a relatively inexpensive option out there that either allows plug-and-play connectivity with iPods or allows you to stream music wirelessley via bluetooth???

*GAMMA,BETA,SONY,BLAUPUNKT ETC ETC are the makes of the stereos that are originally fitted to some VW's (then vw just put the vw symbol on the front but they are not actually made by vw).

*Single DIN / DIN means it will fit in one slot out of the available two slots in your dashboard. Most vw units that will fit your polo are single din.

*Double din means it will fit in/take up both slots. Most of these will not be vw units for your polo.

*If you want to fit a double din unit you will need some removal keys to get your original single din gamma stereo out and then also pull out with force the tray/shelf that is below your stereo. You would then be able to fit a double din stereo most of which will either not be VW or will be a VW satnav unit for example.

*Or alternatively fit a single din vw cd player or single din vw 6cd changer like the one I mentioned to you that is for sale (although you will not be able to use your iphone with this). To do this again you will need to remove the stereo and the shelf. Choose wether you want the stereo or the cd player at the top or bottom then plug the cd player in to the back of the stereo then push both units back into place.

*To confuse you futher sometimes there will be a thin plastic divider that sits above your shelf and below your stereo to seperate them this will need to be removed also as it will piss you off and probably be in the way. Below I have included a photo of : The standard single din vw stereo, the single din vw cd player, the single din shelf and the plastic divider I just mentioned.

I've bought a single din vw cd player in the past and payed about £60 for it

The in dash 6cd changer is probably worth about £100 like i said

I would deffinatly try and stay with the vw stuff as it looks a lot better in the dash and is probably less likely to be stolen from you although you will not be able to use your iphone with these units.

I have contacted the seller regarding the CD changer and will have a look on ebay. I am still thinking about iPod/iPhone connectivity; another member on this website suggested purchasing a cable that runs from the iPhone into the back of the single din VW stereo where the CD player would connect. This will allow me to play music through the iPhone...what are your thoughts? Do you have any experience with such devices?

theres loads of vw cd players on ebay at the mo, the 6cd changers are much rarer so if you can get it at a good price then it would be worth it, i have no experience in using iphone m8 so i cant really help you on that front and i am not sure about the device you mentioned but sounds good if it works.

if you go to halfords you can get a new unit for under £70 wich will play and charge your iphone whilst on the move via the usb port, be carefull tho if the unit has a usb on it then it doesnt mean it will work with the iphone because for a head unit to work with the iphone it has to say iphone-ipod ready on it

if it doesnt then the type of stereo you have doesnt have the software to read the iphone

Hey everyone, as per my previous post, I have now purchased a VW CD player to sit below my Beta Radio/Cassette. I made myself a set of removal keys from an old credit card and the Radio/Cassette quite easily popped out. However, I am having a little trouble removing the cubby hole/shelf (it is dark outside so I will have a go tomorrow); is there an easy way to remove the cubby hole/shelf?

I should have the CD player by Wednesday so a quick installation guide would be appreciated early this week!

£40 thats a decent price.

A rough guide:

* I would remove the stereo with stereo keys if you have them

(you can still keep all wires connected or you may want to remove them to give you more space but do remember which wires go where)

*Then check with a torch above and at the back of the shelf that there is no screws holding it in place, I may be wrong but I am sure it just pulled out but it did take a lot of force.

*Once the shelf has been removed, then remove thin plastic divider which seperated the shelf and stereo (you may or may not have one of these) then choose whether you want cd player at either the top or bottom in you dash.

*Connect cd player wire into the back of the stereo, just plugs into the spare space on the back.

*Check it works now using the stereo (obviously reconnect wires to stereo if you have taken them out)

*Push both units back into place (you may want to put plastic divider back in between the two units aswell, not essential though)

*Put shelf on ebay for a tenner because you will never need it again

*Job DONE! enjoy the OEM blue and red lighting

With regards to removal keys, I fashioned a pair out of an old credit card using some nail scissors...easy as pie...can't believe it worked,lol!

Will I really get a tenner for the old shelf on ebay? Thought it would be worthless (as you said, it becomes useless after installing a CD Player).

Result...got the CD player, followed the guide above and it was easy as pie!

OEM looks immense, highly recommended and cost effective! Even the speakers sound clearer, probably due to my shocking radio reception...is there an easy way to improve OEM radio reception?
