1.3 genesis on a L reg 1992 model bread van.

Featured Replies

Hey folks

New to the site just thought i would start by saying hi.

I have owned my Polo now for nearly 12 months its a 1.3 genesis breadvan style, and i love it for the practicality, the trouble of power become apparant when i get back in the old girl from my weekend car 3.0L TT Supra.

I'm not after going crazy or spending a fortune on the car, but i would love just a little bit more power output from the engine. Is there any subtle mods that can be done to gain a slight bit more poke.

I've installed a lower restricted air filter which helped with the throttle response but i want a bit more power delivery from 45-50 MPH range as its a bit sluggish, can the exhaust be modified by removing the center box with a straight pipe to get rid of a bit of resistance or will it make it worse. I dont want to mess around and make it worse in the long run as i love the car and would hate it to go bang!!!

I'm not looking into doing a engine conversion as i dont have the time or the money to do one, but can some of the parts from the gt engine be suited to the 1.3 engine to give it a slight bit more go.

I'm aware that these questions have probably been asked a thousand times and i appologise if they have but I'm just after a few small small but subtle things to help the old girl on her way.

Thanks

Gavin

change the supra for a daewoo matiz.

then the polo will feel a lot faster, ideal solution.

just change your perception of speed.

I'm not so much after speed just a bit more get up and go for pulling out of junctions etc as i work near a busy main road and you have to get your foot down before they ram you, nobody wants to let you out so you have to put your life in your hands thats my main reason.

Gt cam and an ecu chip will give it some more poke without breaking the bank.

You could change the throttle body for a golf 1.4 spi, but i don't think its much of an improvement over your current one

Also never under estimate the benefits of a good service!

Also never under estimate the benefits of a good service!

just done a service including new exhaust, new wheel bearings on all four, striped and cleaned the carb, Fresh coolant, new oil & filter, new tyres, and new aif filter,

As above it was comented on a gt cam are these easily obtainable or do you have to change any tappets or valves to accomodate them along with the relevand chip too, how much is this likley to cost out of intrest.

Cleaned the carb? 1992 you should have injection and throttle body. If injection, you'll have a ecu, chip should be 35 from poloace on here. If carb, no ecu so no chip.

Gt cam pop up on here every now and then, usually for about 30 with pulley

i don't think that you should rule out the gt engine swap because it's such a cheap and easy one to do! and thats an instant 20hp!

I've recently been doing engine mods to my 1.3 spi. She now has a K&N replacement panel filter, Poloace ecu chip and GT cam. Put the cam in yesterday, you don't need to change anything like tappets or whatever, it bolts straight in. She's alot more revvy now and has a bit more to give. It's not GT power but it's noticably more than standard. A GT cam will probably set you back £50+ as they are quite desirable.

Swap you for my 92 1.05 litre bread van. I've had 100 mph out of it and drives like a sports car, back end drifting etc..... but I am used to old diesel vans over 2 ton. haha

one of my chips £37 inc postage, works well on the 1.3spi.

Cool, where is the best place to get the cam from, just out of intrest what is the difference between the gt engine and the normal 1.3 with regards to the internals
