That's interesting, but to call it a 5 stroke seems a tad misleading to me. It just seems the same but the exhaust gasses get pumped into the middle cylinder? So it's still a 4 stroke but not using combustion to power all the cylinders.

Look at bike engines, 750's are surpassing the 130BHP figure without any turbos!

but they produce very little torque, they are not trying to make a powerful engine here, they are trying to make an efficient engine.

come on then give it too us mikey...

he's not going to post it on the net is he? if it's as good as he say's it is it could make him millions, why give that way on the net for some one else to make

although i've heard the about the old renault turbocharged formula one engines from way back being dubbed '5 stroke' where they pump excessive fuel into the exhuast which flares up and forces the turbo to keep spinning, a bit like a jet turbine..... hang on, that's given me a really good idea...

And isn't that anit-lag you are describing? Used mostly in rally cars these days?

They said at the moment they have got 130bhp but think they could get it to 150bhp.. still pretty good though.

A comapny called 'Ilmor Engineering', that's all it gives. Maybe it will be called the 'Ilmor' cycles lol

how is it not a 5 stroke? Even though the 5th stroke isn't in the same cylinder it's still 5 strokes per cycle.

6 stroke ftw! they're waaaay more efficient but they're only really used industrially for generators etc i think

i like that engine, very neat bit of design, the torque figure is pretty stunning, its more torque than a g40 engine puts out in std trim.

kinda suprised no-one has thought of doing this before, as its a pretty simple idea really. wonder how much power it would put out without the turbo fitted.

130bhp from 700cc is already possible from conventional 4-stroke engines with turbos. I don't see this as groundbreaking, interesting as it is.

There's loads of weird and wonderful engine designs out there, do some googling. A good start is Smokey Yunick's adiabatic engine.

retro antilag was essentially as above, inject neat fuel into the exhaust manifold creating an explosion (and therefore a momentary vacuum) which sucks the turbo round and keeps it spinning.

Hmm that engine is certainly an interesting concept, but 3 pots are difficult to get to run smoothly as it is, let alone with one piston a totally different size to the other lol.

I think many people are confusing 'power' with 'efficiency'. You could have a 1l engine with 1000bhp, that doesnt necessarily mean its efficient.

I will guarantee this idea is nothing new, all sorts of engine formats have been trialed over the years, but sometimes they are useless, or difficult to manufacture.

This thing uses that exact same principle that made the steam engine more efficient (exept in reverse). I guess the trick is getting more power from the expanding exhaust gas than it takes to power the extra cylinder and valve train. Its still not as efficient as a diesel engine.

We will start to see more and more stuff emerge, as the ICE is still very wasteful. In the future engines will reclaim the heat from the cooling system, instead of just pissing it into the wind.

Interesting idea but only 5% more efficient than 4 stroke, not exactly ground breaking...

Yeah i cant be giving clues to my design but whilst my motivation was about efficiency,it would probably be more appropriate for performance. I may fail because the scope for leverage is small,its strength would be a major lack of friction the piston engine suffers from. This suggests efficiency but if it needs to rev at 20krpm for good power it'll be a non-starter.

The rotary is junk,effectively two 1.3 engines siamesed into sharing the same physical unit at the same time,its not efficient despite the reduced forces and moving parts.

I'm all ears for new methods of converting internal combustion to mechanical drive,despite admirable visions of omitting fire entirely from a motor,but the leg/pedal design of the piston engine is gonna continue to be pretty unbeatable for the naturally efficient concept of low speed torque due to its leverage action,though i cant see a way of eradicating its resulting clumsy movements which hold it back.
