Yeah, but some people do not exceed speed limits, so the vehicle technically doesnt 'need' bigger brakes, that was the point I was making. If however you do like to cane the arse out of it then bigger brakes are obviously advisable, its the same as awt else, I used to boil the arse out of the brakes on my nissan micra all the time, and it was just a 1.0, but I was driving beyond the vehicles safe limits, these limits are just easyer to reach if you have too much power lol.

like i have pointed out tho the bloke that built this wasn't one for sticking to the limits (as the video posted shows) so surely bigger brakes are advisable? if not for the safety of him then for the safety of others?

if he podled around every where at 30mph then fair enough, but in the video he's tearing down a street at xxmph with people lining the road cheering him on. not exactly 'Sunday driving' is it?

if your gonna drive like as ass then at least do it in a car that is set up for it. if he drove into the side of your pride and joy because he was unable to stop in time after just showing off to a load of people would you still be saying that technically it didn't need bigger brakes?

But it does say in the add that it doesnt feel safe over 100mph, and as I have said previously I'm sure the standard brakes would haul it down from 130mph to 0 just fine.

I think sometimes people think bigger brakes will stop you faster, which isnt usually the case. I bet in that van you could lock the wheels at 80mph if you wanted to, so the braking force isnt the limiting factor here, that is traction (unless you are braking hard repetetively, which would of course boil the standard brakes much quicker than a better setup). So I susppose if I was to upgrade that van to make it 'safer' I would fit a decent set of wheels and tyres.

I have never driven one of these vans, but I know that you cant drive them flat out with the standard 45bhp engine (either in a straight line or round a corner) because they are so unstable, so what makes anyone think you can drive one any faster with more power?

Its also always my opinion that shitty brakes are a safety feature anyway, I know i drive a lot more cautiosly in a vehicle with crap brakes. Theres nothing more dangerous than a car that feels totally 'safe'. If you see my point.

yeah i see your point mate, and i totally agree about those tires. just saying i would feel a lot safer knowing that was on the road if he had done more than just stick a rapid engine in it

Seeing as we have a debate going here - bigger brakes have the advantage of being able to modulate your braking power more. I had decent tyres on my Mk2 Polo but could still easily lock the wheels with the stock 239s. With bigger brakes however, you can slow down quicker even with the same amount of traction, the best example is my Mk2 Golf with no other changes other than switching to 256s from 239s, it could stop a hell of a lot quicker and locked the wheels far less often!

As in you have a more progressive pedal so you can judge better how hard to brake before your wheels lock? Yeah I can appreciate that for sure. The main factor in braking is of course the driver I suppose.

I know a lot of people cock up brake upgrades, changing things from standard only to end up with a poorly balenced setup and a crappy pedal. But they are bigger brakes and it feels different from standard so it must be better.

So is a brake upgrade really what these things need? I think if you wanted to make it 'safe' you would have to tube chassis it like the ford supervans :D
