Working with carbon fibre

Featured Replies

Just playing with afew ideas I've got at the mo which will include general working of carbon fibre.

What I need to know is how to shape it (from sheet to slight angles) and cutting etc.

Anyone know of any decent sites I can get this info from?

Cheers ;)

anything you make, you have to make a mould from a pattern, and then lay up carbon to make a "plug" which will be the new carbon item.

To make sheet, you just lay up a couple of layers of CF onto a sheet of well polished glass, using epoxy resin.

slight angles? depends what you mean.

as for cutting, you need a high TPI (teeth per inch) blade, junior hacksaw ones are quite good but be warned, put a line of masking tape along where you want to cut as a guide and WEAR A MASK breathing in carbon swarf is proper dangerous.

theres loads of tutorials and even materials to buy from http://www.carbonmods.co.uk/

I just wanted to bend a piece a little over 45degrees so I could mount it to my bumper.

Cheers for the link.

If it turns out to take ages and alot of work for something in essence simple, I may just make it out of fibreglass and trim it in CF. (I'd show you my design but it's top secret :ninja:)

Work with some guys who teach carbon fibre repairs to aircraft engineers, might be able to help out if you can let me know what you're after.
