how much to have it machine poished properly ?

There's loads of detailers on that site that offer most services, but they probably charge alot based on the cars they work on.

Google or Yellow Pages should give you some places local that can properly machine your car, unless you want to buy the stuff and do it yourself..

Wash, machine polish, wax.

I'm sure half the things that people do are just pointless. I've never had a bad shine or a bad finish from just machine polishing and waxing. I'm sure its just the companies that sell all the cleaning crap that make up all these new products that you 'need' just to boost sales.

This is just machine polished and some £7 Turtle Wax.

It's your opinion that all the products on the market that you dont use are pointless, it's the opinion of myself and the hundreds if not thousands of people who do use alot more different products, that they aren't pointless.

That's what opinions are. Why would professional detailers, who earn their living from doing it, use £50 wax if they could get the same results from £7 wax? surely they'd be losing out of £43 profit?

i didn't know just shiny cars got the attention?

my car just fine and it isn't shiny, in fact..it probably gets more attention that a shiny car sometimes.

anyway, stop being lazy! its not hard to polish your pride and joy for a couple of hours :-D

Flawless paint, takes along time and alot of effort to get there.

Id start with a jet wash, then snow-foam. leave that to soak for a while, then caine the arches and wheels with the jet wash and some APC.

Then wash it using the 2 bucket method with a quality shampoo and a wash mitt. You can tell the differences between a cheap and expensive shampoo, just feel how easy a wash mitt flows over an expensive shampoo.

I then clay my car to get rid of bonded on contaminants, that prevent a proper shine.

Wash the car again and dry using microfibre. Chamois scratches paint.

Then get to work polishing, polishing is a personal thing, people use different cutting compounds depending on what machine polisher they use, and pads etc.

Seal the paint up and wax it!

Remember sponges and Chamois give you swirl marks, which stop it from being uber shiny!

I put 2-3 layers of wax on my car when I wash it, makes it shiny if you just give it a quick wash, and stops it all from being stripped off.

I paid £120 for a maguiars DA machine polisher and a further £100 or so on different polishing heads and compounds etc. I have just spent a further £22 on 2000 fine grit wet and dry because there were scratches on the bonnet and VW laquer is too hard to work with G3 alone and I have just spent over 3 hours machine rubbing/cutting/polishing/waxing just the bonnet alone and it's still not finished. I probably still need to spend a further 2 hours just to get it acceptable with some more G3 compound then polish/wax again and that wont be perfect let alone show standard.

So there is a lot of outlay and a lot of time to get paint in good condition, depending how it starts off. My car didn't look too bad until I polished it and saw the marks in the paint. So these people that turn up at your house and charge £150-£200 just to get a car looking nice can seriously have their work cut out.

If you are happy to just get a clean shiny car then get yourself some t-cut and some autoglym super resin polish and spend a good Saturday on it and it will be more than acceptable but this will still take you around 8-10 hours to do the job properly without a machine especially if it is the first time it has been done. What's your time worth?.

This was the paint on my old riley elf when I got it. The paint was shot after it was repainted and it was covered in orange peel.

This was the boot after about 4 hours work.

Farecla G3 or G5 finishing compund (if machine finishing) or T-cut if the finish is not too bad (T-cut can bring back the colour nicely) You can also get T-cut colour polish which is a cheap fix. You can get a 240volt machine polisher for about £20 in Argos (challenge brand) which can save a bit of elbow grease, dont put too much pressure on it though or you could burn out the machine or burn through the paint. Maguiars do a twin set of clay bar and quick detailing spray, some good quality polish (Autoglym super resin or the more expensive Maquiars stuff. Then top it off with a wax finish (maguiars carnauba wax is good and not that expensive) . That lot should set you back around £65-£70.

There are fella, and I believe there was thread comparing good and bad but you could do a lot worse than the Meguiars Kit for the money.

You can tell how much bonded contaminant is in the paint, give the car a wash and get one of those fruit and veg bags from the supermarket and drag your hand over the paint and you should feel it. Also you may have noticed that sometimes when you polish the car in the sun, you see spots left on the paint as if the cloth has not picked up the residue which need more work or a clean side of the cloth.

I'm not being sarcastic I'm genuinely asking you how I could improve on it. I went through the whole detailing stage and spend bucket loads of money on products and I genuinely couldn't see any difference between spending fortunes on products and a machine polish and waxing it.
