1.0 - 1.4 conversion 6n

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of converting my 1L 6n to a 1.4, as the gear box needs changing so i might just swap the lot for a 1.4 engine and box. Am i right in thinking that all i need is an ECU or is there more? and is the power increase worth it, its only 10 bhp, is that a big enough difference to bother with?

Cheers

I've got a 1.4 8v I'm assuming thats what your on about, anyway it will be quite a bit pokeyer i had a 1.0 corsa before this and my god that was slow but the reviews for the 1.0 polo wasnt good either i would just swap em around anyway not alot of difference if you tell the insurance either wahay :-D

and dont forget the brakes lol

theres no point jst sell your car and buy a 1.4 simples

i know its quite a lot of hassle, but my cars in good condition and is the way i want it (almost). its also just something to do and a good experience. unless its stupidly expensive or just a nightmare

I think you have to weigh things like this up! Is the car solid? Can you save money if you sell and buy a 1.4 16v rather than engine conversion? (brakes are already done then etc) I have a 1.4 8v and I sorely regret no getting the valver for that tad extra brass now 60bhp vs 100bhp! I'm thinking with a shortage of valver cars with decent milage I may put a valver engine in (which iirc requires engine, gearbox, ecu, new clocks, (better brakes, not nessaceraly/but preferably bigger but definately better braking system, and I think that's it maybe driveshafts? (I'm not the best person to advise, maybe someone can clear this up?)

I'll be bikecarbing mine soon hopefully then I can move the bike carbs onto the valver lump easy enough!

I think he was on about just a 1.4 8V!

To the OP, most people will consider this as pointless for power gains. As you said, there pretty much won't be any. But if it is for the experience, then I think it would be a good little task.

I think it would be exactly the same as just swapping the engine for antoher 1.0 litre unit. Except obviously I think you are going to need a 1.4 ECU aswell.. and afterwards you may or may not want to tell the DVLA it has been swapped, and I'm not sure whether that will make your car 'modified', requiring you to tell your insurance company aswell.

You just have to make sure that your 1.0 litre is the MPI engine (999cc) as opposed to SPI (1043cc) so you can use the same ancilliaries. If it's SPI then it will be a bit more of a ball-ache..

yeah i was meaning a 1.4 8v. mines the later 1L so thats the 999 not the SPI. has anyone ever bothered to do this swap? i know the power gain isnt massive but anythings better than a 1.0 anyway. Theres always that badge of shame in the engine bay!

hahaha, just take off the engine cover 8-)

in your mind it can be a 1.4, and from what I've heard there really isn't much difference at all

don't think many people have done it, but i'm sure many people will know how to do it as it seems simple enough

maybe you could be the first?! :-D

haha the first just because its possibly a waste of time. I'm assuming if the power isnt a massive gain then the gear box's are similar if not identical? the other thing that needs to go with the 1.4 engine is an antiroll bar. i know its not essential but the 1.0 doesnt come with one, and i dont fancy more speed without it!

I think the gear ratios in a 1.4 are slightly longer, they are much better for motorway driving.

As for an ARB, I don't think that would be as necessary as you think mate.. as far as I can remember the 1.6s might have had one but none of the 1.4 8Vs do. I'm not even sure if the valver has them, and they have like double the power of a 1.0 lol

Someone else could confirm this though 8-)

the old favourite trick was to use a lupo gti front anti roll bar which is 22mm ( 20mm one on the 6n valver) and they cost about £60 new from the dealer. and they are a straight fit with no mods as it uses the same subframe etc

with regards to the engine, the 1.0 mpi uses a bosch motronic mp9.0 ecu, which is same as the 1.4 8v mpi (same ecu with different mapping) you can re-use your existing wiring loom and do a straight swap of the engine, or if you are feeling a bit daring you could probably get away with using a 1600 aee engine using the 1.4 ecu with a few minor tweaks to it...

although it has already been mentioned that it's probably not worth the effort of fiddling with it, i can see the merits of trying to gain a bit of experience, what i would say is do it if you can justify the fact that the car may be off the road for weeks and may never go again if you do it wrong, at the end of the day you could pick up a polo dirt cheap anyway so it's not a major loss if it goes belly up

if the 1.6 doesnt require massive modification then that could be looked into (gearbox linkages, loom and engine mounts?). I'm assuming by that point though that better brakes would be needed. i couldnt live with my car off the road for weeks, if I'm going to make any swap il be making sure everything is ready before making the change. altho I'm sure it would go wrong somehow. i like the idea of the lupo antiroll bar, its still running standard suspension at the moment, i hope to sort everything out in the summer. so any other ideas are welcome

to use all of the 1.6 stuff properly you would need to change the entire fusebox-ecu-engine loom as well, but i was thinking something i bit more pikey-ish

Orite yeah, well 1.0 to 1.4 isn't much but there IS a noticeable difference just in the pull the 14 has in comparison, but if your gonna do it you may as well go 1.4 16v that will give u better gains and probably similar price and work!!

If i do a 16v thought then il have to change the brakes, and also the drive shafts are bigger i think. and i dont fancy doing a pikey job.... my alarm system that came on the car was a bodge, it caused nothing but problems.

brakes are pretty easy, easier than an engine conversion, theres plenty of info regarding the swap on here!

yeah its been pretty good. if i can find the engine and box for cheep enough then I'm well up the change now, mostly just for the hell of it.

  • 10 months later...

you might aswell sell it and buy a 1.4, as its more easier and wont costs u as much!!!

i have a 1.0 mpi base L model. I have already have a lupo gti anti roll bar on it. I have wanted to put the 1.4 8v engine in it. So what i have read on hear it take it you just need the engine and box. Are the wiring and anx all the same.

  • 5 years later...

Ive both a 999cc and a 1.4. The 1.4 is noticeably faster and better for higher speeds. Now im putting an aee in to the 1.4 body and will eventually supercharge it (not a road car). But my question is, if I swap the 1.4 in to the 1.0 would she pass emissions without telling them about the swap as Ireland has a big no no to any modifications (including bigger brakes, alarms...)
