i build my car for me and the way i picture it, not what's in or cool.

tarring everyone with the same brush is so childish, there are some rediculous vw's about and also alot of amazingly engineered near works of art too.

Basically, "we all" (car people, "enthusiasts" if you like) choose to throw our money down a hole when "modifying" said machines. How one chooses to spend their money modifying their car is up to them, but it's all a waste of money and time unless you enjoy doing it. And although I look at that mk1 golf and think why? I'm sure the owner had their reasons, even if it was just for looks and attention... I wonder why mr serious performance spends his money and time on his super track car, for his own enjoyment? or perhaps for looks and attention.. just a little bit. Everyone is as bad as each other when it comes to spouting opinion.. including myself, but it's just opinion!

tbh i dont see what the ford boys have said thats far from the truth. You go to a vw show and its 90% full of bling machines that are form over function, you see hardly any track inspired car and even if you do they are probably audi you are quattros!

Granted there are pleant of big power vws at the shows, but i wonder how many run the optimal suspension/wheel setup for the car?

The comments about the silver mk4 with random bits stickered up are spot on imo.

Ford modders are known for building barry machines if aged 19 or under and the rest just build rather nice track machines, vag modders are known for building more snazzy, understated stuff, well till camber, stretch and rat look came along.

Who cares though? I get told my cars are shite all the time by local barries. But at the end of the day I enjoy my car and I make it look how I want it to look. I think it will,its changed alot already. Mags like PPC and Retro Cars reflect the '70s Hotcar mags i have,being all very universal but with sensibility from an enthusiastic drivers point of view. The main difference is patriotism and i have first hand experience of this - none of my mates would have a foreign car in the early '90s and i remember ridiculing someone in 1992 on his yellow '86 MK2 breadvan! His mods were 'normal' and the only weirdness was in watercooled stuff. And alot of that was just retro/class style.

But read Pvw and you see the aim today is rather different.

Its no longer about patriotism. Or making it your own. Its no longer about your Slotmags or quad Cibie spotlamps because when i had an XR2 there was no wall between me and a mate with a Nova SR,yet a Fiesta ST and Corsa SRi seem a little further apart today.

Its about a gangland scene,where you have to reflect extreme culture of modding to be part of it,alienating yourself from people who mod cars for more practical intentions.

Not that form-over-function mods haven't been going on for many decades,but rarely to the degree they do now,or for the cause they do now. And if its not doomed,i think at least its current popularity certainly is.

I know a lad who had a 16v Polo, dropped it so low the centre box would hit the floor if he did 70 on a dual carriageway. It had stupid little superlights on that were just way too small for the car and ridiculous vinyl plastered over a couple of the panels, with that smarties vinyl in other places, and other random stickers here and there. It broke down constantly, kept smashing the exhaust up, breaking bits here there and everywhere. What's the point in making a car undriveable? VW people seemed to love the thing, yet it was a pile of shit, he could barely drive it.

Actually the guy who posted on page 3 'Shakey' is a bit of an ed38 scene god, however the thread has sorta gone down over there the same way its gone down on here, bemusement at some of the comments and generally respect for individuality whatever marque.
