Hi all,

I recently bought a 53 plate 1.2 VX polo. I bought it on Thursday night, took it a good run out at the weekend maybe doing about 100 odd miles. Then on Sunday night i went to start it and I’ve noticed the engine management light is on and isn’t going off? What i find strange about it is that on Sunday I was maybe out driving about for around 2 hours and the light wasn't on, then when I went to start the engine later on at night the light has appeared?

The guy i bought the car from said that last month it had to go get a new charcoal sensor? Not sure if this would have anything to do with it?

Any advice is appreciated.

might have a fault code stored on the ecu causing the light to appear

faults associated with the charcoal canister would normally bring on the epc light rather then the check engine light so it probably isn't related.... as said above you really need to get a diagnostics check done before anything else... does the car drive normally with the engine check light on or is it running rough?

It's running fine, i haven't noticed any difference in the driving what so ever :/. One of my mates was round last night trying to check it out on VAG COM but it kept saying COM port error lol, Hopefully get the code checked out within the next day or 2.

it could be a few things including emissions related. as for EPC as far as i remember stands for Electronic Pedal Control for DBW - nothing to do with carbon cannister.

I'm really stuck with this now and slowly losing faith in the garage.....

First time i took it to them they just canceled the code, which the light then came back on the next day.

Second time i took it to them;

"Carried out diagnostic check one fault logged, Checked and fault slight corrotion at engine ecu, cleaned up and retested ok cancelled"

The engine management light came back on two days later. ...Then one of my mates read the code for me "P0441 Evaporation Emission System Incorrect Purgeflow".

So i took it to the garage a third time....they yet again canceled the code....Light came back on same day.

So i took it back to them and this is what they done;

"Check engine fault, traced fault to throttle body contamination, Removed throttle body and clean, refit throttle body and reset basic setting".

It's the next day and the light has come back on. So far I've spent £120 which i don't really have haha.

Any got any ideas what it could be? Error code P0441 Evaporation Emission System Incorrect Purgeflow.

Really appreciate any advice.

the purge valve is part of the carbon cannister set up bud, check for split pipes and thet the valve is plugged in with no breaks in the wire.

Thanks alot mate. Would i be able to unplug the purge valve and drive with it unplugged? I'm guessing if the light stays on i would be able to determine if this is the problem or not.

Ah crap. Ill have a look tonight. Where would be the best place to buy a new one? I'm guessing it'll be cheaper to buy just the part and get my mate whos a mechanic to fit it than it would to get it done in the VW center.

can't say i can remember what it looks like on the 'mk6' mk4 and 5 are a small blue / green and black valve that clips onto the drivers side suspension turret.

the mk6 may have it built in to the top og the cannister as they do on later spec golfs.

is it possible to get a pic? i'm not sure about the actual valve failing before, more likely to be a split pipe thats throwing the readings out.

I've attached a photo of the purge valve...well what i think the purge valve is anyway!

Is it normal for it to be constantly sucking air in? It seems the valve is constantly pulling air in even when the engine is just running?

yea thats the purge valve bud, what do you mean sucking air? one end should be connected to the carbon canister (check pipe for splits) and the other goes to the inlet manifold again check for splits.

also there is a pipe that comes from the fuel tank with the fuel lines (usually white) this will then be directed to the carbon canister, you should check that too.

Its sucking air in when the car is on idle so that's probably right. Will go out and have another look mate.

what do you mean sucking air bud, there should be no external air being drawn in from the atmosphere, if it is then that's your problem. it should have two pipes both of which should be sealed to the outside.

Pulled the pipe that goes to the charcoal canister off and found that the valve is allowing vacuum to pass at idle but found no sign of pulsing / ticking, also removed the valve and found it seems to be always open, even with the engine off and plug unplugged; allowing air to flow through it?

i'll see if i have a spare one at home i can test. i usually lob them straight in the bin.

I took the purge flow valve off and gave it a bit of a clean, Attached it again and then cleared the error code. However the light then just came back on about a week later, Which is about the longest the light has stayed off in a while.
