Mk2f Coupe, Under Its Second Restoration!

Featured Replies

Alright guys, Been on here for about a year and a half now.

Iv been collecting parts for about 2 months now to start on a small project, And abit of fun.

I thought about what i wanted from the car and not being my daily drive it didnt matter too much about it taking long or going wrong ETC, i wanted it to be abit of fun and an experiment because I'm entering it into a 1050cc capped track day com.I also wanted something different. After listening to a few peoples 2P's I decided to build a high revving, Rev happy lump using a 1.05 AAU block i already had and then a P+P 3f head and cam that is now finished.

Other things iv used include:

Port matched manifold

HIF38mm carb with custom machined adapters and connector.

4 branch zorst manifold

custom aluminium air box and intake.

mk2 ignition system.

I did drive her for about 3 months before she blew a head gasket. I then faced the dilemma of paying a garage to repair it quickly , do it myself over a period of time or buying a new car and saving the polo for something. So i went for number 3 and here i am now starting the build thread.

So first thing was to strip her down, removed the associated ignition wiring ( Pain ) , removed head and everything needed to do so.

Day before the toe to my garage:

20 mins later at the garage:

and hours stripping:

What kind of condition are these pistons in? and is it ok for them to be so black?

30012010092-2.jpg

These are the parts iv got so far then, my 3f heat stripped down in my room lol, Its been painted black and been nicely polished but have no pics yet :(

My carb:

This is one of the adapters i made, this joins the carb to the hose :) :

nicely matched and polished up:

Hose is on:

Adapter made for the manifold to fit hose + carb , Hedgehog flattened off and polished as well as adapter:

05022010109.jpg

Port matched and polished manifold:

04022010100.jpg

I then mounted it all onto a little jig, masked all the holes off and gave it to the painting team, A nice coat of heat dissipation paint :) :

painted:

Still need to decide on the geometry of the carb set-up, whether i want it above the cam cover , to the side so it follows the same path as the normal throttle body, or facing towards the cabin.

Maybe some input from you guys?

Plenty of updates and ideas pending , things like custom door cards and interior , wheels etc.

Cheers.

Max..

Sounds like a decent project, looking forward to the outcome.

Will the carb not hit the bonnet though? Looks like it will sit quite high...

That was my first thought , but no there's about an inch when i trial fitted it.

If the head your taling about is the one you bought from me, its just an aav head, not a 3f as you already know... unless your swapping gt internals into it?

Look forward to seeing progress. Ian.

sounds pretty good, out come should be good

Cool project mate. Is that a carb from a metro/ mini?!

yeah that carb does like an SU to me.

  • Author

yes Rob, its a Skinners Union Horizontal intergrated float 38mm venturi carb. Shortend to SU HIF 38 lol.

Ian , the head i collected off you is now a 3f, it has double valve springs as the better cam, the casting is the same for all the 1.3s.

Getting on with fitting the carb to the manfiold properlly today, need to fab some braces up for it :)

Seems like a bit of an odd choice of carb, what made you decide to have that?

Aren't the inlet ports on the GT also slightly bigger? or am i being dumb haha.

well played. i keen for seeing how this will work out

Hmmm, yeh it does. But my mates with their mini's swear by them. So i thought might aswell give it ago, i got the thing for free from minisport , its been serviced and I'm gonna polish it up.

And yeh the inlet ports of the GT head are slightly bigger but iv port matched my manifold to it, iv done this instead of just getting the 1.3 manifold so that the gas velocity will be increased becuase of the more narrow chambers. It looked alright on works flow bench.

:)

Blimey you got it free? They're worth a fair bit of money. Am interested to see what sort of power it puts out, what you hoping for bhp wise?

Sounds good, are the narrow runners gonna be good at high revs though? Can imagine it being better for lower down power.

yep there £350 from mini-sport brand new , well when i say free i do give my mate alot of things and he no longer needed this, he now has the same carb but with a 44mm venturi which he uses for his turbo mini.

Power wisei have no idea mate , i dunno where to start.

The spec is:

1.05 AAU block

1.3 3F Head + cam (skimmed + polished ports)

1.05 Manifold ( Ported and polished )

HIF38mm SU carb with 40mm custom adapters.

4 branch exhaust manifold

custom aluminium cold air intake.

1.5 - 4 psi facet fuel pump

Mk2 coupe S ignition system..

And some other bits and bobs.

Its just abit of an experiment tbh, see what these little revvy small stoke blocks are like.

Cheers for the nice comments though mate

hey dude, whats the reason for the aau tuning? so you want to check out the potential of this small engine? in my opinion it makes more sense to install a bigger engine.... anyway, keep us updated! :)

  • Author

i will!

Reason being I'm entering a CC capped rally.

Not aloud anything over 1050cc

Also, its what iv got the AAU already installed.

Another reason being that i wanted to have a revvy short stroke block and see what the things got.

Quality, am glad someone has finally thought fuck it and tune a 1l instead of going down the GT route (although I'm one of those people haha).

I'm reconing anything between 75-85 bhp? Would be awesome if it was a gt eater.

  • Author

you dont know how much id love that , My face would =

thats what i thought really.

Lets do something different :)

I also thought, whats this thing gonna have better than a standard GT?

Fuel/air?

Flow?

revs?

got no idea how its gonna turn out, could be wank for all i know.

Max

It's pretty much a carb'd GT, minus the bottom end! Can see it not being quite as torquey.

Only thing i'd change really is using a 1.3 spi manifold if you want power high up the rev range. I spose they're really cheap and easy to find, can just chop and change to see which one would work better!

When you planning to have it all done?

Yep good idea, well the 1.05 iv got is massively modded now, took about 2 days to finish.

So i think ill do the same to a 1.3spi manifold, and swap them over and my mates dyno.

I'm hoping for it to be done as soon as possible.

At the moment I'm driving a nissan micra, It is a very good little car but totally boring lol. No power at all , a standard 1.05 would laugh at it. Thats why i love my polo lol.

UPDATES soooon!

Got a highly polished cam cover from a 6n going on, engine cover from an arosa and some other nice touches.

UPDATES 13/02/2010

Did fuck all at work Friday apart from polish my 6n rocker cover up :)

Right, think of the dirtiest thing in the world , well the rocker cover up was dirtier lol.

Cheers olly (polo6n2g40)

Pics:

This was after an hour of nitromors.

12022010123.jpg

Then after a day or wet and drying, its not mirror finish and its i didn't have the patience or skill to polish the crevices :(

12022010124.jpg

12022010125.jpg

Heres my 3F head, Its been skimmed but very very lightly , then been cleaned with some very fine emery. Then put back together :)

nice sounding project, be interestiung to see if that SU carb gives you any benefits.

one thing though, this:

And yeh the inlet ports of the GT head are slightly bigger

is wrong, there is absolutely no difference in the ports on any of the 1272cc heads, g40 included. The only thing that differs in a gt is the camshaft and double valve springs. g40 has a different cam again and also sodium filled exhaust valves for extra heat dissipation. Strip the heads down to the bare metal and they are identical.

hayesey we were talking about the GT head against the 1.05 head, therefore "And yeh the inlet ports of the GT head are slightly bigger" is true in the sense i was saying it.

And yeh the GT head only differs from the AAV head by its cam and Double valve springs. The castings of them being identical.

Iv put that somewhere up there.

cheers for the comment.

Good work fella! Polishing stuffs a chore, good effort! I always get half way in and wish i hadn't bothered starting!

What sort of maching did you use to make that flanged plate? Shiney :unibrow:

Fair play to you man, its good to see someone tuning a smaller engine and sticking with it!
