Mk2f Coupe, Under Its Second Restoration!

Featured Replies

Thankyou my man. Its a nice tool.

The porting i did can be done by anyone to be honest mate, I just used a dremmel.

All I have done is remove the casting marks and cleaned up the small radius around the valve, should help a lot but that's as far as you need to go.

Your right about the 1043cc AAU head being the best for porting because of more material to remove in the relevant places, but its hard work.

Also, You cant put a hydraulic head on a originally mechanical headed bottom end (if that makes sense). The oil pump isn't adequate to supply it with enough oil. :-(

I can skim the head though :-D haha

Vernier pulleys is a great idea, Would be pretty easy thinking about it...

I'll have a butchers at the port sizes when I get a spare min.

I'll be using a 3f engine essentially, all that's missing is a bare cylinde head, which i have, but an AAU.

I'll let you know about the skim and inlet

I'd offer to send you my catcams pulley, but "your a smart lad, you'll figure it out"

(a phrase they're fond of at work).

To be honest you could prob do a better job of fitment onto the camshaft than catcams as well..

I do have a spare 1272 head if you want it? Could skim it up etc.

Is it an early with a meccy fuel pump?

I'm ideally after the later spi/mpi style head. But a blanking plate could suffice..

I actually can’t remember if it’s late spec mk2 (Hyrdo head with mechy fuel pump) or mk3, ill have a look. Both the same spec just has the fuel pump hole. I could throw a blanking plate in for you?

Where'd you get your catcams gear from?

Quality engineered products are the U.K. Distributors..

http://www.q-e-p.co.uk/

Can't remember the exact price and my reciepts arn't to hand. Matt at QEP was very helpful and sorted out a fuck up in the dowel fitment. It's still not as good a fit as the oem type mind, but with 70 ft/lb torque (iirc) it "shouldn't" (I hate this word daily) go anywhere!

Either way sounds good mate, pm me a price and if your up for fettling it with a dremel tool I will happily reward you with your required dosage of beer/other/monies ;)

Ahh awesome!

You got a catcams cam? or is it just the pulley?

I'm gunna try Jabbasport as they are apparently suppliers, and i know there awesomely helpful. Was just curious of other places that can get them.

PS, sorry to hijack your thread max

I got a catcams camshaft suited for the g40 engine and the truelock pulley. Can't fault the camshaft, was bob on.

Get a price from the importers and Jabba, should be the same. UPS from QEP as well, so no fucking about.

May be silly, but theres no contact details for them?

Just some links, the link for catcams just takes you to there main page?

Or will it go through to QEP if i contact catcams directly?

How much did the cam set you back, if you don't mind me asking?

The contact details did change whilst I was sorting out the fitment problem on my pulley. I think it was an 01444 number or similar. 0845 51 95 720 is the number on their page for uk sales etc.

I'm moving house atm, so all my reciepts are at my rentals. I'll hopefully know by saturday, and i'll check my receipt for the phone number and price. Camshaft and pulley were circa 400 sheets. I was gonna go piper, but they don't do a pulley (as far as I'm aware), so was ordering a pulley and kinda thought fuck it i'll get a camshaft now. Piper camshafts were circa 200 notes when i was looking.

Sweet project, why did you make the fly cutter so big though lol?

I would've made a tool holder just bigger than the spindle and put a longer tool in....afterall its a single point tool so shouldn't deflect too much, if at all.

Have you ever skimmed anything before? No offence...

You need to be able to pass over the object in one pass, No going back and forth over already machined surfaces.

This means you don't get any track lines or high spots. Also, the bigger the radius of the cutter the better. Milling always leaves cutter marking on the work-piece,

The bigger the radius of the cutter, the closer the markings are to a straight line. So yeah there was a reason I made the disk as big as I could lol

Ill get some pictures up soon.

Got the cylinder head pretty much done now. Also took the old head off the 1.05 bottom end, Found this:

171220101326.jpg

171220101325.jpg

Whats the the carbon stuff thats gathered around the plugs?

Also made the isolating plates for the DMTL:

161220101319.jpg

161220101320.jpg

161220101321.jpg

This will be sandwiched between the carburettor's mounting face and the adapter plate thats bolted to the inlet manifold.

The isolating block does what it says on the tin, it isolates the carburettor from the inlet manifold. Meaning it stops it from getting hot and boiling the petrol.

I will be making these and the adapter plates when i get my traders section.

Few pics of taking the head off:

It looks so bare :-(

And the "Pièce de résistance" :-)

Updates of full engine soon :-D

He lives!! , Haven't heard from you in ages fella lol.

Yes the spare head is yours if you want it. Its a 1272cc mk3 head so no hole for the fuel pump.

Can skim it for you , what else would you like?

Note that theres two of the iso blocks?

Haha

Update! spent Christmas eve in the workshop, That's what you call dedication!

Did a few more things:

Made the gasket up for the manifold to adapter

231220101334.jpg

231220101335.jpg

231220101345.jpg

Then decided to spray the inlet manifold red , don't like it at all so its going back to black:

231220101342.jpg

241220101349.jpg

231220101348.jpg

231220101347.jpg

231220101346.jpg

Had to port the opening to the inlet quite alot, The exits of the carburettor are pretty big.

231220101343.jpg

231220101344.jpg

Few more pics of the head:

231220101336.jpg

231220101337.jpg

231220101338.jpg

231220101339.jpg

231220101340.jpg

Anyone know what the hell that stuff on the other cylinder head is? And why its there?

i really like the idea of doing the manifold red, will give the engine a nice bit of colour. Good work.

Looks better in the pics i think.

Looked "tacky" in the flesh.

might look bit better when put up to the block, bit of contrast in colour, and would go well in the bay.

Its black now anyway haha.

See you monday. Hope everything goes to plan with the swap :-D

haha that was quick,

Yeah hopefully, see you monday

I think you might have some trouble with the carb and air filter hitting the bonnet with all the extra height of the adapter and ISO block, I did with mine and I didn't have the ISO block, just something to consider :)

Looking good otherwise max

Just looks like small carbon deposits, engine it was installed on could have been running a bit rich, thats all.

Haha, sorry chap been working loads and moving house. Only got tinternet sorted this week. Handy the heads a mk3 one, save messing about! We're square on the adapter plate and iso block arn't we? If you work out how much you wan't for the head plus a skim and a bit of port fettalage and let me know.
