The "acetal" block has now been removed, and a nice thick gasket in its place.

Indeed its a boost friendly carburettor.

16v? you must be joking.

Its new home for a while 8-)

I'm digging that last photo, something about the way that guy looks with his hand on it, if it had a title it would be ''We will meet again''

Is that garage instead of a unit then? Bit small eh?

  • Author

That guy Haha , he's my dad.

The garage is the best I could do man, trying to get a unit was impossible on my own. This will do for now as its pretty deep, cheap and dry.

Full resto here we come.

Properly moved into my new garage now, although its pretty small it will do nicely.

@will , yeah the breadie looks nice. Gonna drop the front down 20mm as its got some reverse rake going on. Also, is there any chance you could take a look at this r5 carb? Don't know what I'm looking at!

@slim , don't think that was me  , you having these wheels then?

yeh i think youd get away with a 40mm drop on the front to make it look right, i think it was kerrly who did it on a grey mk2 and it looked well, yeah i can have a look at the carb for you, heres a list of things i did to mine in order

-removed choke assembly, blanked hole

-made new throttle assembly

-loosened all bolts, screws, nuts, jets, a/c jet etc, checked condition

-striped down

-cleaned all nuts and bolts, would like to find each specific thread and replace them though

-get all the castings aqua blasted,

I used this service, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vapour-Blasting-...=item27bfb53807

-buy gasket set and seperate shaft seals, fast road cars on ebay, contact him for seals, half price compard to other vendors

-thoroughly clean following blasting, had big problems after not doing this, grit in the acc pump check valves, both removable, one in the bottom of the float bowl and one in the acc pump jet, seems pressed in at first but comes out with a little persuasion, clean it out and replace the o ring

-rebuild carb carefully, cleaning out all threads

-i fitted a 8mm fuel inlet to use in conjunction with the malpassi regulator, thread is m10x1.0

and i think thats about it, , il post a pic up of how i did the top hat, i think youll be interested for your supercharged application

@slim , don't think that was me  , you having these wheels then?

PM'd about the wheels, and really? Maybe the Sheffield side of the M1 then, whatever that roads called, haha. It was going South I think, out of Sheffield and was Red with what looked like RA's on with arch covers. Can't be another around up there lol :retard:

  • Author

Hmm maybe. Don't know what road you mean though lol.

@will. Ill Pm you mate.

Progress is slow at the moment :disgust:

Got pretty much full weekend on it this week, and matty's popping over so might get the ball rolling again.

I've started working on the head again, currently lapping in the new valves and fitting the new stem seals, Few pics:

Because it took me 5 minutes to remove and re-thread.

No sweat dude, when is it?

you are shocking

Even tho uve done it for nout, I'm gunna make you work to find out the date of the RR lmao.

Cause you never ever know these things

And how exactly am i like a vagina?

I'm comparing it to my comment in regards to archgap, the more fingers you can get in, the worse it is. So your saying the more fingers you can get in my, the worse i am?

Yeah, confusled.

  • Author

Haha, :-(

It's just a play on your version. I didn't put much thought into it .

^Gay!

That head is looking minty fresh man, this project is like the only thing I like about CP at the moment.

Cheers slim , just seen this comment. I think the only reason at the moment I update this thread is for you!

Right, current plan for the engine is a

High compression ABD bottom end, around 11/1

Rebuilt with new rings, and bearings if needed.

1272cc hyrdo cylinder head, ultrasonicated and acid dipped.

Smoothed valves & solid tappets

268 Newman camshaft

Vernier pulley

Mh inlet manifold

Weber DCD 28/36

Custom spun velocity stacks

Completely custom closed ally airbox, external filter

That's all I can think of.

If you were wondering why I'm using an 8v engine instead of a 16v unit, which you probably are, then its because I think its a much better option for this application. They're easier to tune and play with if your on a budget, and because I'm going to be going FI next year, and the ABD is strong enough to take moderate boost at its standard C/R and with its standard rotating gear, its the best way to go in my opinion.

sounds good to me! should be nice when finished!

  • Author

Cheers dude, i'm aiming for 100bhp N/A , Then when the time comes for boost, i'll be dropping the C/R and hoping for ~150bhp with the renault 5 carburettor.

Are you sure you don't want to point out the fact that you get an a further 25hp from an AFH?

I'm more interested in keeping it normally aspirated, to me forced induction is an crude efficient way of improving an engines power, but vital if you want a lot of power from an 8v

I appreciate what your doing with your setup and it is interesting and different, but a lot of your views on carb vs injection, 8v vs 16v, and N/A vs forced arent really that well backed up. My next step from my 8v turbo, would be a 16vt, as the whole purpose of them is to allow more flow, even in standard form.

It seems all this effort to better a simplistic, dated technology could be better spent making a more modern, efficient, and powerful electronic setup?

Not a dig at you at all, i still enjoy seeing real craftsmanship and the use of unique components. Keep up the good work (Y)

Ian.

Ian, thanks for your comment...

What views are you proposing?

My views on carburation vs EFI is that I prefer the former because it interests me more, its cheaper than a standalone set-up and I can personally tune them.

8v vs 16v - again I'm more interested in the old fashioned 8v engines, they're cheaper to modify and there's more room for improvement compared with the more refined AFH. Also, because I'll be moving to FI next year, the ABD is a great base to build on, i will just need to drop the C/R back down.

N/A vs FI - In my eyes FI is a slightly crude way of improving the power output of an engine that wasn't intended to run at boost. Efficient yes, crude is not the opposite of efficient though. Just as an example, after boosting a N/A engine the internals and general components are loaded up with higher stresses than they were intended to take, mainly from the combustion pressure and heat etc, which leads to premature failure or wear. Its just an opinion, one that I will be experimenting on soon :-)

Finally got round to stripping the bottom end of the ABD last night!

The bearing shells seem to be in good condition, as do the rings but i will hopefully be replacing these for good measure.

A few pics, sorry about the bad quality but it was really dark!

Nothing wrong with an 8v - just have to have massive valves (lotus twincam for example  )

Interested to see the inlet manifold :-)

  • Author

I like them better to be honest, if you haven't already guessed

A mate at work has a lotus twin cam in his escort, couldn't believe the size of the valves?

What do you mean regarding the inlet manifold? Its just a MH component dude.

Custom spun velocity stacks

Completely custom closed ally airbox, external filter

Thats what i meant! :-)
