I painted a pickup truck in a garage and it was a fucking nightmare. Just make sure you plastic sheet everything and have it secured properly as mine was blowing about like net curtains  Good thing the finish on my truck was not meant to be good. Gazebo and wet ground (stops dust flying up apparently) just outside the garage. Spray and then push car in to dry with heaters and all the garage sheeted up? All depends how much room you have got to move round the car. Painting is hard!!

Good luck with it all though.

I love the engine plans and work. Good to see some things going in different directions on here.

Yeah that sounds like a good plan, stuff i've sprayed in the past using rattle cans worked quite well. I just took my time for a change with the prep work, primering then the final flatting. Applying the colour isn't too hard at all when you've got the right tools. I've got a decent spray gun, compressor etc.

Engine work is my favourite part, My aim is 100bhp/litre eventually, which won't be attainable with the double choke weber, i'll be moving to either DCOE's , CBR600's or ITB.

The biggest obsticle i've got is running it effectively and safely with the high CR, 12:1 could give me pre-det problems if there is hot spots in the combustion chambers, i'm gonna need to smooth everything off considerably.

Cheers for the comment dude!, means a lot!

If it was me i'd connect a gayzeeboo onto the end of your garage and spray it in that.

Get the heaters going (not parrafin as that gas given off messes with the paint) then push it into the garage and close the door sealing it off from dust. Then i'd use the gazebo as a sterile room kinda thing, rather than going straight to the elements leave it there for everything to settle in once settled enter the garage if you need.

Yeah as above, thats the best idea i think. It will need to be a fully sided gazebo though as there are things in close proximity that i doubt getting paint on will go down well (neighbours car, cat, grandmother etc)

Wet ground thing makes sense too!

More!! Just out of interest, that a 6j wheel right? What tire size is that?

bet that grips well!

Good work on the engine sir! :)

Looking at your carb setup, how's it for bonnet clearance? The adaptor plate looks to add a lot of height. My webber wouldn't clear the bonnet of the mk2 with the standard adaptor and airbox, it was fine with a k&n though.

Cheers mate, it's alot of fun!

Bonnet clearance is my biggest enemy, i'm also adding a airbox onto the top of the carb.

I may have to drop the engine and/or raise the bonnet.

Long time no see anyway, where have you been?!

I'm using a propper engine though, so i the sump is miles off the floor :p 8-)

Subframe is closest thing though, and its about an inch from tarmac!:-(

I'm fine, the saloon is still off the road but I've been working on a mk2 coupe for my brother (1.0 SPI) why've you used such a large adaptor plate then? Is it to give time to channel the air into the manifold opening?

For some reason i didn't see yours and erics comment :?

More this weekend :-) , Nah that's a 5.5j Tarantula wheel, 175/50/13 Yoko A539 rubber.

HAHAH! fair enough, cambered roads not be an issue? looked at Andy's blog (PPP Andy with the green bready) and his 8v sump sits about an inch (by the looks of it) higher than the subframe so you haven't got much leeway before possible terminal damage?

Yeah an inch should do it to be honest, that's if i have to. Could do with someone checking the bonnet clearance from the top of the head ( without the rocker cover on)

The cambered road on the way to Santa Pod caused me massive problems last year

How come the loons of the road?!

The adapter is a bit shit to be honest, i can do a lot better but i rushed it for some reason. The problem is that the bolt hole spacing on the manifold is really hard to measure. So making an adapter plate using high precision 3 axis machines is hard!

I made one using a bench drill and a perspex jig! Although I never quite finished it as in the end I didn't need it. I think I still have the unfinished article somewhere, but sold all my other webber stuff now.

It failed the MOT on some rust underneath near the fuel tank and I haven't touched it since (July last year!) I'm hoping to get it sorted before the show season, but I'm going to miss a couple of shows this year anyway so it might not make an appearance until 2013!

Right, you've pursuaded me to make another

Block and pistons look awsome max

Getting rid of the bulk head i see :unibrow:

if i remember max ran the su carb down to pod and the car pulled very well had his engine not been fried he would have made it down the strip to or was that the webber?

  • Author
Alright mate, I'm currently looking at using the SU Carb from a mini as a few of my mates have spares in the garage etc due too one of them who never is happy with the power and always wants more haha, was just wondering what luck you had with it if any at all?

Unfortunately I never ran it with the Su carb, however if its set up right it should be a nice little runner, with it being an CV carburettor, sorry I can't help you further!

And yeah the scuttle is going, or should i say gone. Got a shit load welding/fillering to do now though!

It was a weber DMTL dude, yeah it was only running on 3 cylinders, No4 had no compression!

So, could you summarise what you have done with this engine?

I really can't be bothered reading through the 973 posts to work it out.

I'm with you on this one! Thread could do with a serious tidy up!

^Gay!

That head is looking minty fresh man, this project is like the only thing I like about CP at the moment.

Cheers slim , just seen this comment. I think the only reason at the moment I update this thread is for you!

Right, current plan for the engine is a

High compression ABD bottom end, around 11/1

Rebuilt with new rings, and bearings if needed.

1272cc hyrdo cylinder head, ultrasonicated and acid dipped.

Smoothed valves & solid tappets

268 Newman camshaft

Vernier pulley

Mh inlet manifold

Weber DCD 28/36

Custom spun velocity stacks

Completely custom closed ally airbox, external filter

That's all I can think of.

If you were wondering why I'm using an 8v engine instead of a 16v unit, which you probably are, then its because I think its a much better option for this application. They're easier to tune and play with if your on a budget, and because I'm going to be going FI next year, and the ABD is strong enough to take moderate boost at its standard C/R and with its standard rotating gear, its the best way to go in my opinion.
