Mk2f Coupe, Under Its Second Restoration!

Featured Replies

why are you using the head from a 1.3 on a 1.05 bottom end? Would this not lower the compression ratio?

I would have stuck with the 1.05 head and got new cams.

they are both flat heads so the compression stays exactly the same. just bigger valves and ports = a good thing

I get u.

^Thats your Mad Max Polo right there.

I'm impressed, My mates got a Triumph Herald and it's got a lovely sound. The only thing I would say is where's the other carb? lol.

These were the carbs that were derived from the WWII Merlin engine I believe.

lol i didnt know if you were getting on my back about the carb but then realised that you ment why am i not using twins.

I just want to get it running then ill start maybe upping the power, want to get it tuned and set-up properly first though.

Cheers for the comment though man

Engine cover for sale.

Also, Becuase alot of the bits iv made for this are custom made by me, i was thinking that i might start making custom parts for people on here

who haven't got access to a machine shop but could use a few custom bits, things like:

Brackets

Adapters

custom bolts

manifold

modifying existing items

Anything really give me a shout if you want anything.

is this what you are doing the BH2GRR in? if so you are looking to be ready before i am max....and what the hell is that carb??

The mini guys will love you having an SU on there tbh

I'm actually intrigued as to what this is going to be like. Shotgun a passenger lap

Good thinking.. i'd have a pair of axle spacers if you machined them up.. should be pretty easy too. To go between the stub axles and rear beam. I know they are available, but if you priced them competitively i'd be in ;) , prob 12mm thick.

UPDATE: 14/03/2010

haven't really been up to much recently due to various reasons. But the good news is the engine and intake are all togther now just needs torquing up.

Just got ignition , fueling and timing to do and i think its just a case of putting the oil back in and she should fire up ( I hope ).

Iv also started on my brakes, Got some tasty new ferrodo pads ( cheers Mr.P ) and iv stripped the carriers and calipers off which iv then sand blasted and sprayed up with gloss black hammerite. Also gonna clean up the disks because there pretty new just abit rusty from not being used.

Before work started on them. Disgusting i know.

10032010284.jpg

Then after a good hour of sandblasting , took quite long because i used beads that are used for polishing titanium lol. Didnt want to use anything to course of it would change the shape of things too much.

Ill update with what they look like after painting them, I'm having the carriers red , everything else black 8-)

Got my new pads

Also , the little metal bush things were pretty fucked so...

Also got a pic of how the lump looks up to now , however iv put the dizzy , HT leads , fuel lines and vac advance lines on , so its kind of out of date allready lol.

Hope you like.

Also , i need to think about my induction system , really don't know whats gonna be best because it needs to be good to make use of the big carb.

I'm thinking ,

Ducting going from the carb to an air box, simular to the MPI unit that the GT uses, then two cold air feeds going to the box from the front of the car.

or

ducting from the carb to the front of the car and use a small sized K&N , (hate the big ones) ,

or

just a k&N bolted to the carb?

Any other suggestions?

This is looking awesome mate. Have only just checked this thread out.

Loving the idea of a little engine with that much poke.

  • Author

lol cheers mate, got plenty of updates to come this weekend. Axle spacers , stripped interior , engine basically finished, brakes, rust removal , painted bits of exterior and more lowerage ( cutting a few coils here and there)

Cheers

Looking good dude. Could you not of used GT pistons to up the compression ratio a bit. Might of given you a few more horses.

  • Author

hmm are they not slightly longer? i know there 75m bore wise.

Good point though. Id rather do that then use a GT bottom end.

Max

Yeh they are the same bore, I have no idead about the actual differences in the pistons, just i know that they are different lol.

Might be worth looking into for future reference though.

  • Author

sure is. That way, i keep the short stoke , but up the C/R.

Max

gt piston dont fit, their compression height is to low so fitting them would dramatically reduce the CR, it probally wouldnt run at all, lol, oh and the AAU 1 litre bottomend your using has a CR of 10:1, same as the gt!

they are both flat heads so the compression stays exactly the same. just bigger valves and ports = a good thing

Not necessarily, not going to go into details tho...

Cr of an aau is 9.8:1, almost a gt.

This is one of the only threads I've been watching. Got to say I'm intersted to see how its turns out, I'm also messing with the spi engines but I'm using a aav. Would be good to see a rr when its done.

Keep up the updates

Thanks alot mate for your comment.

Yeah i was about to write that the C/R's of the AAU and the 3f arent the same.

Iv got lots of updates to type up but it seems there's not been much interest so it wasn't at the top of my list.

Put them up! Gives me something interesting to read :-)

  • Author

Awww cheers mate.

Yeah iv got brakes to put up, wheel and interior, oh and a few body work bits.

The engine pretty much nearly done.

Just need to:

> Run fuel lines ( cant find any hose clips )

> Set rest of ignition components up.

> Fit new radiator, Might be using a nice motorbike item, mounting it behind the grill, if i have one lol.

> Fit new rad hoses because i had to cut some of them cus they have fused to the pipes.

> few other bits and bobs.
