Mk2f Coupe, Under Its Second Restoration!

Change of plan for this now, it will be a miracle if its on the road even next year, which is a mixture of trying to find somewhere suitable to finish it, paint it etc, and a change of use plan.

Its now going to be sporting a charged rebuilt HK lump, so the ABD that i've been building will more than likely go in

the breadvan, maybe with the weber DCD, 268* Newman cam etc, probably the same spec as i listed a bit ago.

Need to get cracking but all this shit weather means i've got no where to do it :-(

LOl, coilovers tonight means I'm attempting to start building them. However after cutting off the original bottom spring seat with a dremel on the first strut, there is now way I'm doing the steering arms, it takes AGGEEESSS!

Any other idea how to cut them off without it taking literally hours?

Ask kiz how he does his ... ?

Also max did you want these wheels bud :) ?

  • Author

Think i've got a set lined up now mate, thanks though.

He uses golf stuff so probably is different!

Just gonna use the angle grinder, and may even end up making my own steering arms to weld on. The exisiting ones are shit anyway!

Yeah, Kiz/Guy just cut below and above it, then grind the weld down until the center falls out.

But if you are using the strut then fuck knows?

Be easier if you had 2 pairs, do as above to one to get the arms off then butcher the other to remove the arms leaving the strut as it should be.

Just as easy to cut it off with an angle grinder around the weld, and then re-weld it 2" lower dude!

It was just the problem of the dremel taking hours that i was getting pissed off about!

In that case mayaswell make your own arms and just grind the steering arm down

Thats what i thought jamie, just need to find the time :-(

I could make them out of some CDS tube and sheet steel. Its only a 10mm holes about 5" away from the strut at 90 degrees!

Just use a nice thick block of steel and mill the holes and and shape it the same as the arm ? Obv thinner at the ball joint end :)

That'd be over-kill dude.

your overkill ....

:p

Lol, even for me!

I'm gonna see how cutting the existing ones off with the angle grinder goes for now, if it doesn't work. I'll be machining some up!

I think i've decided on the direction i'm going with this now, knowing me it may change within a few hours :?

The current plan is to go down the blow through bike carb route, after a few hours of researching exactly what needs to be done to the carbs to allow them to successfully handle a bit of boost,

It doesn't seem too bad, so heres the shopping list, no idea on what sort of power it should produce, but i'm hoping it should prove worthwile!

ABD Piston rings (Building the ABD bottom end up with new bearings and rings)

K03 turbo or G40 charger, can't decide!

CBR600 carburettors (maybe R1's, as they seem to be covered a lot by this route)

Plenum (approx 2800cc's in volume)

Bike carb inlet manifold (will be doing this and the plenum myself)

Wideband

Some form of knock detection.

Patience

Intercooler

Supercharger be easier for setup I reckon!

  • Author

Yeah, a lot easier, think i may go for a G40 for now. Then see whats what. I want it to be quick on very low boost anyway.

Knock detection, how else can you do that without an actual knock sensor? Could hook one up to an LED dash light?

Intercooler yeah, a big one!

Det can? Be ok once it's setup, I just don't think people realise how much you get away with on NA compared to boost

  • Author

Whats a det can?

Erm in simple terms some headphones bolted to the block via some pipe haha.

Like a stefiscope

  • Author

Ah right, could do for tuning yeah!

I'm sure its possible to link up a det sensor to a dash mounted LED or simular.

Yeah, Kiz/Guy just cut below and above it, then grind the weld down until the center falls out.

not actually true - i dont take and angle grinder to them to make the centres fall out - that would be pikey - i machine mine out so i get a perfectly true steering arm so when its reattached its correct and the same as the other side.

Max, if you want an easy life when doing it then you need to cut the arms off another pair and then completely cut them off another set.

but to be quite honest i wouldnt bother doing it this way as the strut body itself is way to long and you will only be able to lower it like a normal spring kit.

Cut the arms off the strut - then cut the strut off the hub section and then buy a shorter strut body to start with or it will just ride the bump stops

  • Author

Erics not going that low, so his wont need that. Mine will be getting a shorter strut housing as it needs to be pretty low.

I've fucked off the chore of cutting the arms off and re-using them, instead i've machined my own out of 10mm steel, will be gusset re-inforced etc and will look 100 times better than the OEM ones.

Well I had a little amount of bump clearance with shortened ones with my Gaz stuff anyway.

  • Author
Who needs bump stops? Ahah

Rather hit a bumpstops than shocks max out and pop dude. Looking forward to hearing how they turn out anyway, someone told me of some 10m steel ones bending so intrested to see what you do to cure this.

 Yeah right,

Should hopefully get yours done this week erica!

Anyway, K03 or G40?

awesome max! look forward to them!

toothies on a g40 cannot be beaten! you know it!

but power and reliability wise, k03

also, the mk2 ignition setup just turned up. thanks again mate! just need to figure out how to connect it up now

The hardest bit is which wire goes where on the coil
