they're smooth as can be. Pics make it it look rough. Dunno why.

Eric, only free time I've got at the minute is at work. So there might be quite a lot of progress.

268 yeah.

Ah fair enough then, the exhaust ports polished or? Will reduce carbon build up wont it?

Omg that looks so fresh!

Ultrasonic cleaning is the only option!

Gonna try and squeeze the block into the big unit we have, just because i can!

I'm sure there's other options than sonic cleaning tbh, it's just suitable as its readily available to you.

284* newman camshaft

Shit i forgot to reply to your PM, will do now sir.

Lol your a bell end , why didn't I learn to do stuff like this ! Dammit :-) what's the name of that really flexible hosing you got ? EBay link ?

I've been doing it since i left secondary school. Dont know on the helical lined flexi hose, it was expensive though!

Finished the GT hyrdo head yesterday, few pics;

This is pretty much finished now, and will be used on the FI engine.

Also started the strip down, rebuild of the mechanical HK head...

Started by giving it 10 minutes in the bath...

Then took it out and left it to cool (gets up to 70deg). Then it was time to start stripping it down.

Whichever monkey fucked about with it last rounded off the 3 bolts holding on the camshaft end retainer however!

20121207_151451.jpg

So bolt head had to be drilled out...

Then it went into bath for another 10 minutes to try and remove some of the grime surrounding the followers, could then start the removal of the cam, followers and tappets...

Next job is to remove the valves etc, can then start properly cleaning it. Have been in contact with JMR racing about getting the ports properly flowed, and also work to the valve throat, seat and the valves themselves, have also got a quote for a 284* camshaft from newman.

All the best with these engines, really hope they turn out as well as you're expecting from all the effort and calculations

Looking forward to seeing the work you carry out on the mechy head!

I would be very interested in a newman camshaft. I'm sure a few other Mk1 polo owners would be to if the price was right! you can send a HH cam away to DBilas and they will regrind to a few different specs of your choice.

Have you a price for that winston? As I've been told by two different manufactureres that re grinding these cams isnt the best idea. Considering that a brand new cam is the same price too.

And I've read a few articles that confirm this too.

When I'm ready to order it, ill get in contact wih you if you want.

Great work as always Max, Keen to see whats next.....

I've always been told to be cautious of re-grinds. It was just a thought as all the mechy cams aviliable cost a bomb and they also tend to be 300 degree plus. They are 169 euros + you need to send them a donor camshaft.

What type of money are we talking? If you could get intouch when you order that would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers mate, have just messaged you back regarding the engine.

Newman only want £150ish for a 284 , i need to double check that its definetly a camshaft for mechanical heads, i did quote the engine code to david so I'm guessing he knows exactly what i want.

I still haven't decided what car the mechanical headed engine will be going in, which will determine which camshaft spec ill go for.

Beginner's question:

Is the difference between the mechanical head and the hydraulic head in terms of how the tappets operate? The whole head looks completely different!

Does the mechanical head have any advantages to the hydraulic head? Not that I'm going to just fire one on my engine, purely out of interest.

Just wondering dude,

Obviously you have spent a lot of time researching and thinking about the engine, with performance in mind, how come youre sticking with a dizzy and carbs?

Id have thought if youre going so indepth to the point of possibly modelling a head on CAD and doing some flow analysis you'd be wanting to use EFI or at least mappable ignition as its so critial? Or are you just going for flat out performance and not too bothered about drivability?

Just keen to know, I guess its justified by the fact this will just be a track slag?

Whens your deadline?
