Mike, the use of solid lifters should allow for a higher revving engine without valve float i.e when at high revs, the valve gear movements should be more accurate. I'm not sure if this is true for these engines and even if you can get them to rev that high. They have smaller ports and valves than the hydro heads however, which may be an impediment. I know max is working this out ATM. They also look a fuck load better!

surely the smaller valves would make a difference? I guess more power would be gained through how long they're open for and how freely the ports are flowing.

I enjoy four strokes sometimes. Maybe i'll strip one some day.

Though my experience is limited to a stock HK without limiter, reved 8k but not real power there.

And my totaly reworked GK with regrind shrick 296, 38/33 valves, 45mm webers+++ 130bhp@7667rpm.

The engine itself is abit more noisy, especially if its not adjusted correctly.

Is the difference between the mechanical head and the hydraulic head in terms of how the tappets operate? The whole head looks completely different!

Does the mechanical head have any advantages to the hydraulic head? Not that I'm going to just fire one on my engine, purely out of interest.

The head is very different indeed. The technology difference between the two different head designs is hilarious, nothing makes sense on the mechanical head.

The good thing is though the valve-train weighs nearly half of what the hyrdo's does. Which is one of the main reasons they make a lively little engine.

Obviously you have spent a lot of time researching and thinking about the engine, with performance in mind, how come youre sticking with a dizzy and carbs?

Id have thought if youre going so indepth to the point of possibly modelling a head on CAD and doing some flow analysis you'd be wanting to use EFI or at least mappable ignition as its so critial? Or are you just going for flat out performance and not too bothered about drivability?

Just keen to know, I guess its justified by the fact this will just be a track slag?

Yeah your right, if i was chasing 100% maximum performance possible then i'd invest in EFI + mappable ignition, but i'm not! :-)

The interesting bit for me is taking a whole bunch of components and seeing whats possible, what i can get out of them. Its what i did with the coupe.

I should really clear a few things up tbh, as it seems to have confused quite a lot of people.

The mechanical headed engine (high comp NA) will not find a home in the coupe. The hyrdo head will be for this, and will be a FI engine.

The mechanical head progress has been documented in this thread soley because I was doing both heads at the same time. I'm still undecided on what the hell to do with the mechanical headed engine, as I've only started building it because i have the parts to do so from the components i machined for the coupes first engine plan (Decked ABD block and pistons).

The HK headed engine might now be going in the breadvan instead, as i think it will make a better engine all together than the AEE on carbs will, by this i don't mean peak power. Another reason it won't be going on EFI and megajolt is time/money, i haven't got the money to throw into the breadvan. Once this is on the road, i can concentrate on building the coupe back up, where i'll be spending a lot of time/money on getting the most possible performance out of it, this will more than likely be ran on mappeable ignition, with the bike-carbs and G40 charger etc.

I've used the HK head because i have it, and i've never used one before, which makes it a lot more interesting. Standard vs standard they're a restriction when comparing them to the hyrdo head, by the looks of it they use slightly smaller valves/ports (though i still haven't took any measurements, calculations).

I need to have a look through some stuff and see exactly what needs to be done to be honest, then i can maybe send the head off to JMR racing, and purchase the camshaft, though this will set me back circa £600 for them both.

But, its doing stuff like this that interests me, not just wanging an already built 130bhp 16v engine in, instead.

Yeah the smaller valves may be a restriction, though a well picked camshaft will sort that out. The smaller ports will also be looked at, though looking at the photos of the heads, the inlets look to be the same size!

Yep, that's right. It'll be nice to see the differance is perormance between the two routes, though i'm guessing the mildly charged lump will ruin the mechanical headed ABD!

Deadline on the coupe is infinite! Deadline on the breadvan is ASAP to be honest. I wanna quickly build this engine up over Christmas, and then drop it in, sort everything out and then enjoy some derby-shire roads, cough snake.

Well, I bought the engine in Germany in 2004. KFZ Brugge Motorsport/Voss motorsport is the creators.

1W crank total 1446ccm, 10,4:1 CR, SORG airfilterbox matchported to 45mm webersVWM weber inlet, VWM headcover, 38/33mm valves, P&P, regrind Schrick 296, programable weber-alpha ignition, SORG exhaust manifold. Crank, FW and pressureplate balanced to 1,5grams/cm.

The balancing is extremely important if you want a long lasting high reving engine!

I can take try to take some pictures of the exhaust ports if that is of interest.

The engine is not in a car, and I am waiting for my new Steilheck to arrive from Germany, witch also have a nice GK engine on 45mm webers :)

Should be. I was undecided on what to use, either the sorted HK or the AEE.

But after thinking, i'm going to the trouble of putting in a new engine, and sorting everything out on it. Also, i have all the bits to make this engine already, i might as well use the rebuilt HK

I don't generally like just fitting a full engine that i've not taken apart and looked at, even if i know its fine! , the AEE may well have more grunt, but this should be a funner more reliable engine after its been rebuilt.

Don't know if i've got the money or time to get the head-work done though :-( , that's why the AEE has gone up for sale.

I should think the G40 type engine will be superior, better design head, supercharged etc. But you never know! , the power delivery and drive-ability will be very different.

That's the rule of thumb for NA tunig MaxMax.. Iv only got 40hp to find!

I know, i know. Got a old aged friend at ITM with a 160hp lotus twin cam engine, its basically standard :lol: (its a 1.6)

Regarding the engine, its not even because something might be wrong with it (though it does come into it)

The main reason is i like fucking about etc, painting, cleaning and checked shit, and with this ABD-HK engine, that will have all be done done.

Even if the engine makes less power than a AEE on ZXR carbs would, i still wouldn't give a shit because the HK would be nice and clean :-)

I'm now undecided on what to do again,

Use the mechanical head on the NA project, sending it off the JMR to be flowed, and then buying a decent camshaft etc

Or use the hyrdo which i already have the cam for?

This will probably go into hibernation now untill i finish the breadvan off, then ill start building it up again.

Don't know wether to rob the brand new piston rings i have for this project, and use them on the HK-ABD engine, time will tell.

Also dug out all the ABD stuff i have under my desk, it was this time last year i put them there!

Also lobbed the HK head in the bath, measured the cam and it appears to have only ~6mm of lift!

Not surprising about the small lift - think about how it operates the valves!!
