Mk2f Coupe, Under Its Second Restoration!

Featured Replies

If you dremel where the guides protrude I'm guessing youll benefit power wise but will it affect the play in the valves much?

I'm not going to be dremmel-ing them, i'll be machining them down.

With less legnth on the guide i guess wear will be accellerated yeah.

The GF has a lower compression than HK so that makes it good for boost out the box. Flow doesn't matter to much for boost as its forced into the engine rather than sucked in by the pistons.

Alot of the N/A sorg engines seem to use HH/GF engines. I'm not sure why though. Maybe its easier to fit 1W crank etc into the HH/GF?

I'm deffo up for a newman cam at that price Max! When are we ordering? :)

I think we really need to start a mechanical engine chat thread. to keep the knowledge all in one place and to keep your thread clean?

Sounds a great idea, i was just about to start a thread regarding the mechanical engines, but not a technical one, more "lets see what youve got"

They will use the HH/GF for the better design of cylinder head i guess. they're the heads with some of the combustion chamber in the head right?

Your right about the porting not been "as" important on NA engines as the incoming air is forced in, but poor flowing areas of the port and valve area are made worse so with FI. But, to get more air in, you just up the boost. A better way of doing it would still be to have a well flowing head though, as you wouldnt get the draw backs of having to up the boost etc, causing a higher intake temp.

Regarding the cam, can you wait till the 20th?

I'm in no rush for the cam as I'm still collecting parts for my HK. so when ever your ready sir!

I will let you start the thread. we can show what we are building and if it gets technical so be it haha

Just checked the valve steam diameters....

Inlet

#1 = 7.95mm

#2 = 7.95mm

#3 = 7.95mm

#4 = 7.95mm

Exhaust

#1 = 7.93mm

#2 = 7.93mm

#3 = 7.93mm

#4 = 7.93mm

They seem ok, apart from inlet #3 appreared to have a lot of run out when rotated ? I'm gonna put it in the lathe and see if its just the clearance of the guide that makes it appear to "run out"

Also checked the valve "rock"

Inlet

#1 = 0.4mm

#2 = 0.4mm

#3 = 0.3mm

#4 = 0.7mm

Exhaust

#1 = 0.5mm

#2 = 0.6mm

#3 = 0.5mm

#4 = 0.7mm

Dont really know what to make of them results, the stem diameters look ok, apart from one suspicious bent one, however the stem to guide clearance looks to be causing considerable "wobble"

I should have ideally done a "rock" test on my head with brand new valves & guides, then i could have checked what they ideally need to be.

Has anyone got any literature with any numbers in for clearance etc?

Might have to get new guides put it. :-(

Its 0.8mm on an afh. cant be much different

I might have specs somewhere. Will have a look in a bit maybee.

Can't you do the guides yourself?

Can remove and fit guides myself, but haven't for the tools for centering on the guide and re cutting seats.

Ah yeah, seen that done before? I love watching metal be cut haha, especially slowly !

Nope.

£75 for 8 new guides...

Might be able to re-use the valves as they seem to be of uniform dimensions. Gonna check the one that seems bent though.

The HH head have some of its combustion chamber in the head.

From factory the HH have a CR of 8:1 and 60BHP

In the glory days of the HH engines they changed to flat top pistons to CR 10:1 or higher, and then they got a nice engine.

I have a frien who formerly owned a Derby from 79, with a HH engine, 316 deg camshaft, 2 x40mm DCOEs and exhaust.

Pulled nice and with 7000+ rpm sounded nuts! estimated 90BHP or so.

Sorg had "tuning kits" for both the HH and GK engine back in the days, with 86bhp, 90 bhp etc. with TUV.

On German Ebay these TUV paipers is sold from time to time.

8:1!!

That's very low, forced induction territory.

Strange how they still produce 60hp, which is more than much more modern engines such as the NZ

Someone said FI??

Just google: polo 1 turbo bickel + pictures

Just remember a napkin ;)

Love it, this thread excites me, machining, polos, engine mmm...

keep up good work

Hahaha. None of this engine progress is even for this car, but my breadvan GT!

Cheers dude

Word. Just found your valve stem diamters

Valve Stem Diameter..............New

Inlet......................................7.97

Exhaust.................................7.96

And guide wear limits

Max radial play.......................New.........................Limit

Inlet.....................................0.35..........................0.7

Exhaust.................................0.45.........................0.9

I'm assuming radial play refers to 'rock'. If so, it looks like inlet 1 is a little worn and the rest are fine. Seems it's your guides that have worn too and not the valve stems

I think ill just get all the guides done for good measure, you can have all the head flow capabilty you want, but if the valves are leaking because there bouncing around off the seats, youre fucked!

I think i may have some HK valves left over from my mk2, so ill see what condition there in.

Is the HH the only flat faced mech head?

The HK do you mean?

Edit; lmao look at them lobes! they're square!

You wanted a long duration cam!

What car is the HK from? I'm just looking through my manuals and can't find any mention of an HK in a polo

that cam was either on here or on ebay a while ago wonder if someones bought it and now selling it on for more as I'm sure it was that price before and its not got as much info in the description part as it did before :/

IIRC it was a 300deg cam on here not long ago
