erm about the ignition problem, check the order if the sparks. as its 1342 clockwise (i made the mistake of thinking the engine went counter clockwise lol! this is as your lookin at the cam btw)

Iv just checked my leads and yeah if your looking at the dizzy from the passenger side wing, number one lead is tilted towards the front of the car, then going anti-clockwise it goes 3 , 4 ,2 i think. I'm sure thats right

captin says the order clockwise should be 1342, but your order clockwise is 1243, i may be reading it wrong but could try switching 2 and 3 around and seeing if that helps

Hmmm looking at the dizzy from pas wing its anti clockwise 1342 isnt it?

haha I'm stnding on the drivers side. the cam spins clockwise. from the passenger side it spins anti clockwise. which from the passenger side spinning anti clockwise the order will be 1342. my explanasion may have been poor, sorry.

yep checked that but still no avail :doubt:

Pissing me off now, i really need someone to tell me if the ign wiring is definetly correct aswell.

Also , I'm pretty certain I'm getting a spark but its not a very big one at all, is that my problem? because iv heard alot of people on here stating that if youve only got a tiny spark your pissing in the wind.

Max

after reading through your thread, well done on all your machining work , might giveyou a shout in the future!!!

your engine earth looks good and attached.

you say your getting a spark, but your fuel is pooling in the inlet manifold, sounds like you maybe overfueling it, try gravity feeding fuel into the carb feed with the elec pump disconnected.

when i did my AFH conversion i needed a jump start off a friend before i could get it running, needed to tweak things whilst cranking and this kept killing theoriginal battery, so a peugeot diesel was called upon and this sorted me out.

try that mate.

Yeah the left hand side earth is connected but the lower one on the right hand side isnt , do you think it could be that? because I'm not getting a very good spark so i think thats a big contribution to why shes not firing up.

As for the fuel pooling, that was after like a good 10 mins of cranking without the fuel pumps on (there diconnected) , so i cant see how it could be the that the leccy pumps are over filling it because for 1. the fuel lines are t-pieced , and 2. the carb shuts off when the float is high enough, What do you think humer?

cheers for the help though!

Max

u dont have the right hand on? thats where you are problem will be! haha the lil brown wire from the coil WILL not be able to cope. put the thicker earth strap on and i should think ull get a much stronger spark and hopefully ull start up

Hm i may not have a clue what i'm talking about here but i had a similar problem when trying to get that ignition setup to run bike carbs on my gt engine. Seeing as you have changed the head, have you done a compression test? And the different bottom end could mean your timing marks are out? Also, I would have thought, if you're getting a spark then it should start even if it is weak? Try charging your battery, always helps. And my engine earth only made my engine turn over faster (which i guess helps a lot) and probably improved spark a bit. Also, are you sure the carb's getting fuel to it?

Also, mine wouldn't start so i just got pissed off with it and left it for months. I then came back to it, replaced the entire ignition setup, and it started straight up! (had to crank for a while and try playing with choke/idle whilst turning over, that's what i did too). So don't give up! Nice to see something unique and different!

No mate, you seem to definitely know what you’re talking about.

Yeah I’ve done a compression test after fitting the new head and I got around 150psi respectively on all 4 cylinders and I wouldn’t have thought the valve to piston timing will be out because they are basically the same cam+pulley.

I’m sure I’m getting a spark because I (stupidly) touched the plug and got a nasty shock , but I could hardly see a spark whilst checking them, This was before I noticed I was missing an engine earth , so iv replaced that and not given it much time after that (bought a new lovely little mk2) as the daily.

I think I’m going to spend a day on it this weekend, replace the coil +ve with a thicker wire, check the earths and check all the circuits.

None of this explains why a freshly charged battery and one that was working on my other car failed to turn the engine over properly.

Thanks for the help and the positive feedback mate!

Keep it coming.

Max

sonds to me like dizzy timing is way out, when cranking does it sound like engine is fighting against itself? if so your at least 80degrees out. try using a timing lamp and a jump pack. also that t piece in your fuel line is a no go. all it will do is draw air up from your return pipe (basically your pump will push fuel through line till it meets the t piece then it will try and draw fuel from return pipe) bascially trying to syphan, which in time will work but for a bit will draw up air.

hope I'm helping :)

Hello mate,

How can the dizzy timing be 80degree out?, they only bolt on one way correctly (plugs and vac advance unit being in the right orientation) , And only have a small amount of movement for advancement and retardation. Iv set this in the middle for now.

As for the T-Peice method of fueling , it has been executed on almost all of the high flyers on this forum that are using carb set-ups, Besides , i dont think this is my problem.

"humer" of here has given me some great advice regarding the coil wiring and earthing, I'm yet to try his method so fingers crossed it will be what is wrong.

Thanks for your input though,

Max.

sorry i meant 8* degrees past tdc :p sill me was very early. :D is the t piece method to try and recirculate the fuel back to the carbs then or??? I'm running r6 carbs and I've never thought of using fuel system in that orientation.

hope i helped a little ;D

Ahh so you will probably no more than me if your using bikies.

The t-peice method is so that the carb has the correct fuel pressure, the fuel goes to the carb , fills it up, when the float shuts off the valve the fuel goes back down the carb in a cycle, once the carb needs more , it fills it up, alot of people use it and most swear by it.

Really want this up and running soon :(

Few More pics of current state, Looking pretty sorry for herself, Thinking about giving it a new paint job, Maybe rattle can satin red, Really want to get it back up and on the road,

Gonna sort the brakes out and then get it towed back to my house for the last final touches, Don't know whether to finish everything off (brakes and engine, Also interior) and just put it back on the road, or keep it off the road and give it a full going over, Running gear and brakes colour coding and painted etc, New custom interior , maybe bucket seats etc. What you think?

That radiator is massive!! Whats it from? lol

Looking good though dude! I'd keep it off the road over winter, make it pimptastic for summer!

Then over summer you should rock this as a daily whilst doing a G conversion on the MK2.

Thats what i'd do atleast

lol got it all planned for me toby i see,

The rads from a focus, Got it free in the end so wacked it in, Looks much smarter than the original, and will keep it nice and cool 8-)

Wont be doing a G for a long time, The amount of money that G's go for is way outa my budget,

But yeah i think your idea of keeping it off the road, Fully sorting it out for the summer , Then brining victor (My mk2) off the road and wacking in something saucy.

I'm still sticking by my guns and wanting an ABD/GT on 600's

have you got this running yet mate? machining work is spot on! howcome your using an 1" 3/4 tho?

Not properly, Got problems with igntion (very weak spark, and something shorting somewhere) but haven't been up to the car for ages so haven't had a chance to sort it out.

Do you mean why am i using the HIF38?

fair thought it was 1" 3/4, carnt imagine that to be very economical or fast what made you choose it ?

  • Author

Why not? :-(

Its not there to be econmical  lol

Iv used it because i got it for free, My mates driving mini's swear by them on performance and reliability terms, no ones ever done it before and it looks the dogs balls IMO :-)

Can you post a link to those water pipes, I can't find them :s

Cant be looking very hard mate lol ,

Or just put "flexible radiator hose" in the search.

Its really good stuff.
