Removing oil stem seals I found putting a small socket over them (either 12-sided or 6-sided Torx) and very gently and carefully twisting them off works well.

Great, Ill have ago now.

Cheers.

No worries :-) did it work OK for you?

It did yeah, The last one was stubborn so just grabbed it with some moley's lol

Anyone else got any tips on cleaning heads properly. Ports and everything?

Arr its fine about the gasket paper matey, Ordered a cart load of eBay, All sorts of thickness and materials for £6, pretty good to be honest.

Just PM me then when your ready about the manifold.

What's happening about the adapter then dude? You want me to make an identical one to mine? And what carburettor are you using again? DMTL?

using a 32 34 DMTL 0 171 00

Hole centres are 87 x 46 mm square (107 x 66mm OD). Onto an MH inlet, which is a funkin Trapeziod pattern (as you well know!).

107 x 66mm OD???

You mean outside dimension? from the outsides of the whole to the outside of the opposite hole.

Yeah the MH is very dodgey, From what i clocked it up at, VW were making it hard for us lol

What mods you doing then dude?

107 x 66 is the carb flange OD, the hole centres in this are 87 x 46mm (within 0.5mm). Which I'm hoping is the same as the plate you made to fit your carb!?!

Sorry its late lol.

Yeah ill check that tomorrow. Just finishing off rebuilding it, got the wrong bloody mid gasket twice.

Adapter still needs finalising, Outside profile etc.

What spec engine is it going on etc?

Are you using a rubber gasket between the carb and the adapter or just bolting the carb straight to the adapter plate??

Engine is a stock GF Driver lump (early mechanical), think there fairly high comp. I have been considering changing the whole engine though. It's only been in the car a few months. But I have a 3F bottom end sat there, just need a good head to put the internals back in as I stole the head for my G40.

Yeah you definetly need to use a isolating block, It stops the carburettor from getting hot.

My set up will be CARB --> ISO BLOCK --> ADAPTER --> MANIFOLD.

Obviously using gasket paper between them all.

In which case I need to make sure I'm using the same block as you.. The carb was off a 1.8 rocco, there was a rubber i think... somewhere! What are you using?

Need to get this right really!

  • Author

well the isolating block will have the same mounting holes as the carburettor so I wouldn't worry about that. Get a pic of it up on here mate.

How you getting on anyway?

Are you making isolating blocks up, or using an off the shelf OEM rubber flange?

Been workin in Scunthorpe this weekend. Thought to myself, I'm not gonna work this weekend, i'll have it off, go into work and sort that inlet out, fuck it! No such luck.. been crawling around in a chicken factory trying to tig on a fairly messy hangover :puke:

Kept it down though

I'll get it sorted soon. Assuming you aremaking an isolating block to match my carb hole centres and it fits onto an MH inlet, i'll take the plate and get you to skim the inlet when iv got it chopped about...

well iv got an OEM one, But i can copy it for you if you want?

Just let me know mate.

Yes yes, that would be spotty frog! Pm me a price for the adapter plate and iso block + postage and i'll send you paypal fundage. Once I have the bits I might get round to sorting out the inlet!

Done it dude.

looks sweet !!! also noticed you said about your mates having minis and was going to ask if you know anyone that wants some fast road parts for an 1150 thats done 1000miles ish since bored out.. then noticed that youre in sheffield. got swiftune and aldon parts on it and just wanting to get it gone for cheap ish or the right price.. I'm in the birley area I'm driving in a red polo 6n lowered on 14" steels

Don't really know about the mini mate, but ill look out for your 6n as that's near my nans house.

Don't really take much notice of them as most haven't got anything to do with the VW modding scene, but just rolling on some knackered halfords alloys. :disgust:

Problem with it was the fact that the spindle of our CNC can only hold upto 7kg's of tooling. This beast weighed 12kg's

Obviously it had to go on a diet:

She's a monster though, really proud of how she turned out.

Nice work

Cheers arun.

Awe top work mate could do with having my head skimmed real soon, how much you thinking to do it? as your not to far away

  • Author

£40 or so?

  • Author

That's including postage back btw.

M

You sir are a legend! That flycutter is a work of art!

I like the look of the porting (from what I can see). Would you be up for porting out a 1043 head for me? I'm up for sending you a head and inlet and sacking off my mechanical head. From what iv been led to believe, the ports are smaller, giving you more scope for removing material.

..Just I have a 1043 hydro head doing owt and a 3F bottom end and head internals, but no head. That would save me the hassle of welding up this inlet, that I never get round to doing!

40 quid for a skim + postage is a good price, it was 30 something at scholar engineering last time I had mine done and that didn't include postage obviously.

edit.

When you gonna start selling vernier pulleys?.. Max's one-stop machine shop :)

Thankyou my man. Its a nice tool.

The porting i did can be done by anyone to be honest mate, I just used a dremmel.

All I have done is remove the casting marks and cleaned up the small radius around the valve, should help a lot but that's as far as you need to go.

Your right about the 1043cc AAU head being the best for porting because of more material to remove in the relevant places, but its hard work.

Also, You cant put a hydraulic head on a originally mechanical headed bottom end (if that makes sense). The oil pump isn't adequate to supply it with enough oil. :-(

I can skim the head though :-D haha

Vernier pulleys is a great idea, Would be pretty easy thinking about it...
