hi everyone, was wondering if you can help.......

i need a new box in my 1.9Diesel polo mk3 my engine code is AEF

I have sourced a skoda 1.9 Diesel gearbox from a felicia which has an engine code of AEF also....

now normally i wouldn't ask an i'd wait for a vw one but i need it like yesterday and there doesn't seem to be any around in my area or part searches....

AM i right in thinking these are the same boxes.... dont fancy buying and finding out its not thats all..... many thanks in advance...

Odds are it isn't the same gearbox. On felicia petrols they have VW engines but skoda gearboxes so I imagine it's the same for the diesel. Also the polo (6n) diesels have different gearboxes when compared to the golf due to limitations in the engine bay on the polo. Which means the skoda could also have a golf gearbox fitted to it, so you won't know until you have a look at what this skoda one looks like

VW AEF gearbox is a small block (085) with a big block bolt pattern on it. Just to make life confusing, skodas are a right mix of bits.

yes it will fit the engine, but it wont work with the rest of the bits on your car.... so no, don't buy it

ok, ALL skoda felicia gearboxes including petrol and diesel models share the same transmission casing, so hence they all have the same bolt pattern for the bellhousing.. the only internal differences is slightly different gear ratios and final drive ratios

the diesels then have a 20mm thick cast iron plate that adapts the bellhousing to fit the vw lump, the 1.6 aee petrol does too but it is sightly different (diesel one shown in this pic)

the adaptor plate bolts onto the gearbox before it goes onto the engine,

the skoda 001 series boxes (felicia/favorit) shown above are totally different to the 085 vw transmissions, the mounts are different, driveshafts different, linkage different etc etc... hope this helps

a big thnakyou to all who replied.... it was a grate helpalthough..... i woke in the middle of the night realising the massive mistake i'd made as i answered my own question thanks all car is almost sorted now...... had to put another dmf flywheel in as it was out of balance..... in 8000miles...hmm... thats now been sent back tho.... ttfn
