Should I go for Ported or Sealed?

Featured Replies

Putting my sub in next week as I'm on mid-term break, just wondering if I should go with a ported sub enclosure or sealed?

Sealed seems to be slightly cheaper and I've looked around the net for some advice. People are saying smaller cars go better with sealed...

Any suggestions? Thanks

i have always personally preferred ported goes louder and you can tune nice and low

ported every time. means u can feel the music as well as hear it!

Thanks, I was told to get ported but sealed was supposedly better for smaller spaces. I will be using my boot space a lot, should I still go for the ported?

sealed.....for real low bass!!!!!

if you need the space go for sealed.still sound quality with 1000wrms

for REAL low bass ported and tuned to 20-30 hz it will rip your insides out

you can still go ported with a small box but it has to be tuned correctly and you have to take the displacement of the sub and port into account

I need to make my own ported box for that right? I've found two on ebay so far ...ported £21.98 and sealed £16.98 ...sealed is smaller. got a few answers on here now, will probs go for ported. Anyone got a sub in their 9n3??

not neccessarily it all depends on the volume of the box as if it is too small the port length may not be achieveable without taking to much volume out of the box therefore reducing box volume which in turn increases tuning

to help you design a good ported box use this program

http://reaudio.com/speaker_box/LPort_Box_Calc.html

firstly type in the size of box you want

then adjust port width and length accordingly to achieve your desired tuning

ahh guys, I went for the ported on ebay, received it today and its bloody sealed! Going to message the seller now. My friend says hes got a port though, shall I not bother and just use his port?

sealed is better anyway lad.

i had 4 12inch subs in the rear seat of my old mini.

liquid injured hearing , i think thats what the doctor called it.

the vibe stuff is ok

the only advantage sealed has over ported is the box is more forgiving if it is slightly over or undersized

ported needs to be correctly built for the sub and tuned to peak at a certain level

but ported in a competition vehicle for example will always hit an spl meter harder and louder than sealed

sealed in my opinion is just a compromise on sound compared to a well built and correctly tuned ported box
