Hello All,

I am new here and recently became the owner of a MK4 (i think) Polo i have some issues with it which i am trying to resolve the first being the really faded paint work i have t-cuted the bonet about 5/6 times since i have had it and it appears to be getting better but after a few hours will sill fade away a little bit, are their any tips to getting the colour back apart from a full re-spray?

Secondly i have a large amount of rust down the side panels and doors are their any tips and tricks to remove this and re-spray the offending panel?

for the faded colour you cant do much pal, it will just keep fading, best thing i found is g3 compound rub it in with a lint free cloth and let it kinda dry in rub away with a lint free cloth (clean one) and it should be more brighter, it wont last forever but its better than t-cut

Ah okay so really all we can do is to respray her? Seems such a waste brilliant car (my first)

i got a red one, mine was all faded and i had it machine polished by a company and I've kept it waxed sinse and it is spot on. worth a try its a damn site cheaper than having a full respray

its all old paint mate they use to put lead in it, thats why it fades so much in the sun, well they have stoped puttin lead in paint , so yeah if you want her constantly shiney spray job, or g3 it everyother day!!

Out of interest mate how much did that set you back? I really need to get rid of the rust before i shell out for a full polish and wax......

is it bad rust patches ( cant see your pics) if not just rub it back primer and spray yourself pal, if you haven't done it b4 get a test piece and work on,

i dunno if this is a myth but my mate told me peanut butter puts bring it up well, i dunno how long for or anything could always try that

Peanut butter brings up black plastic trim well, dunno about paintwork lol

I know halfrauds do a rust fixing thing for like £40+

I'd like to find a cheaper way that i can do myself though, as my car has rust patches the same as lilrich. Although my paintwork seems to be pretty damn nice still and not faded.

Any more ideas kids, or any guides to rust removal/fixing up?

i got a full machine polish for £30 but knew the guy doing it

Took some better pictures of the rust and paint damage to see if anyone could give me anymore advice on fixing her up.

the handle always go on vw's, they come on vw sharan's, mk4 golf, polo 6n, polo 6n2, lupo's, arosa's, ford galaxy etc etc so its probably best just to buy a replacement one :)

I was thinking about doing that but was not sure if it would work out too well.......as i said previous this is my first car and i have not really been into modifying or anything like that before so how would i go about rubbing this down? Would i need to use a selection of different grit papers etc? A little bit of advice would be really appreciated.

Yeah you'll want to start sanding down the rust patches with various grades of glasspaper. When I did mine I started with 60 (coarse) to get all the major crap off, then moved onto 240 (medium), then 400, then 1200. 1200 will be right at the end when the metal is all shiny and completely rust free.

Go to Halfords, they sell sheets of the relevant glasspaper / wet n dry for about £2 quid a pack iirc.

Once you have sanded down all then rust (make sure you get any surrounding stuff so it doesn't carry on spreading) add several coats of primer. You could buy a spray can or buy a tin of anti rust stuff and brush it on. If you brush on, sand it down between coats so it stays nice and smooth.

Once you've applied several layers of primer, it's time to overcoat. I would recommend using a spray can but some people use brushes.

Without starting to write an essay, I will stop there. If you need more advice I'm happy to help. Make sure you take your time preparing the metal, otherwise the rust will return and start to look crap again.

That is a great bit of information which i have printed off for reference :) We are looking at around £40-£50 to restore all of the rust if not more and about 2 weekends does that sound about right?

I wanted to ask while i was on the subject will the same principles work for these affected areas;

Also this is right on the wheel arch do you think if i sand this back to the bare metal it is going to damage the actual arch due to it having rusted?

As you can see here the bumper has flaked....how would i repair this as i take it this is made out of fibre glass which if i sand could end up making a hole.

Not overly sure about the fibreglass bumper. Lightly sanding down, priming and spraying would probably be alright, not sure it would require filling. That wheel arch looks fine for filling, just make sure you get rid of all the rust.

this product worked well for me, it's a cheap and easy bodyfiller.

And yes it sounds like a job that could be achieved over 2 weekends.

Would probably require a couple of those filler kits, some primer, glasspaper, overcoat and laquer, so 50 quid sounds about right.

Thanks again for the information you are providing i am really sorry but can i just run over this one last time just to be sure....because now that this Loctite Stonechip and Dent has appeared i am a bit unsure what i am doing.

• First thing is first - get some coarse sand paper to get rid of all the rust and any other crud that may be associated with the rust
• Next go down to a lighter sand paper removing all the rust going finer and finer until a smooth finished metal is present
• Third prime the newly sanded metal (do i prime this with metal primer of this Loctite stuff) sanding as we go to make sure a nice smooth finish is kept (would you recommend sanding with a smooth paper when sanding the primer. A couple of coats may be needed.
• Once the area(s) are primed get the red colour and spray it onto the primed surface removing the rusty patch(s)

What is this Loctite for? Is that for when i sand the wheel arch? to get the shape back if some of the arch falls away?

The loctite body filler is to replace the metal that was lost from the rust forming / sanding down the rust. Generally use this when the rust is quite severe and makes a noticeable dent in the bodywork when you sand it away. Make sure it makes a larger mass than the original metal, sanding it down will allow you to shape it to the shape of the original body panel.

All the stages you listed are correct. Use body filler based on how bad you think the rust is.

pack of 60 grit paper

pack of 240 grit paper

pack of 1200 grit paper

1 tin of primer (spray)

1 pack of this loctite filler

I am going to give it a go this afternoon so i will report back on my progress

Done the back wheel arch and left skirt too. Pretty happy the first coat i showed you all before is now ready for a overcoat of red Do i just apply this like the primer spraying thin coats on and building it up??
