anybody know where the ecu is on a 3 series compact? searched on bimmer forums and google but no use.

e30's are above the glove box or above the accelerator area, one was for abs and the other for engine but i'm not sure which is which now - been a few years since i've worked on bmw's.

if its an e36, there is a circular cap on the top right of the engine bay near the battery that if you take off the top you can plug into your laptop

yeah its the e36, its for an ecu chip upgrade if that helps.

forgot about this, had a browse in the haynes mag, it doesnt say specifically where it is but it keeps talking about being behind the battery. limited use but sounds similar to what polo6n2g40 says

It's at the rear of the engine bay, behind the battery (it's in the engine bay on most 4 pot E36s but I've seen a couple where it was strangely in the boot). There's a cover that you take off, and the ECU is slotted in sideways behind that. All very nice and well put together.
