What is classed as a mod?

Featured Replies

Hey Everyone,

I am new here and just been reading some of the threads about insurance just got my insurance for my very first car been passed 6 months i am 23(nearly24) no ncb no points no convictions but i have kids.

Anyway enough of that what do insurance peeps actually class as a mod? I take it changing headlights and de badging the body is not going to need declaring but i am looking at a new exhaust and an induction kit....are them the type of things that will need declaring?

Sorry if this has been asked a million and one times before, i did have a good read before i posted.

Cheers

Rich

i think you need to declare everything from small to massive change

Really? That is a bit rubbish

If you mean upgrading the headlight lenses etc. then I would declare that, uprated bulbs I would not. Exhaust and induction definitely declare. Debadge - not sure but best to just phone your insurance company and ask, as with anything you're not sure about.

At the end of the day if you do have an accident and they inspect the car and find something not declared, the cost of declaring it will suddenly be absolutely irrelevant compared to the cost of a refused insurance claim!

All i want to do is change the indicators from the yellow ones to the clear ones, remove the polo and 1.0 from the back and de-badge the grill that is it for the time being.

I am going to then work on the body as the rust is pis**ng me off then when i save more mullah i will look at chassis/engine mods.

Rich

if you go with a company that only charges more for BHP increasing mods then you can do what you want to the car ( still declaring ) but the price wont go up.

i THINK HIC are a company who do this sort of cover.

i wouldn't worry about the rear badges, i'd let them know about the indies and grill though

well i wouldn't but if you wanted to be safe than sorry it would be best too

they might not even be bothered about it depending on who your with, but some can be right bastards when it comes to mods.

A sticker is a mod to a insurance company lol

they now ask if the car has optional extra's fitted!

as above, my mum used to work in car insurance and she always told me putting a TURBO sticker on your car could void your insurance.

I dropped them a email too see what they say! Hopefully tomorrow i will know :)

Mods are a no no, the insurance company wont insure them. What a drag.

any deviation from manufacturers specification need to be declared, some insurers arent anal when taking out the policy but can be when you claim, so its better really to cover your bases and tell them EVERYTHING, that way the cnuts cant find a way to wriggle out of it

To be hones i only wanted to remove the 1.0 from the back along with the polo and the badge from the front grille that is all.

they could always "fall off" mate, one of mine came off with a pressure washer!!

changing to a debadged grille would be a "modification" but most cosmetic items are unlikely to affect your premium unless they are full bodykits which would in some instances make a car more desirable (but often have the reverse if you crash thru halfords shop window and makes people NOT want to steal it)

best bet mate is to phone them up and say, if i fit a debadged grille will it affect my policy, and then your all good. if in doubt, find out from the horses mouth (ie insurer) anything else is heresay as policys differ even with the same insurer from person to person and car to car

think you wood get away with clear indicators coss some mk4s came with them on the front.

Thats probably true yeah.

Just like i said, some even ask if the cars fitted with optional extra's!

That means alloys! as apposed to steel wheels.

If there doing it correctly pictures of your car should be given to the insurance company. So theres no arguments about what they will and wont insure.

Much like brentaker do.

it was a factory option to not have the badges anyway wasnt it? i know people with polos and dont have any mark up of the badge just the polo one. As well why not just spray your front grille and badge satin black this is what we did for my mate for a while till we had enough cash for a badge less but tbh i just wouldn't tell them its not a huge mod like a engine conversion or a wide bodykit :D

I was thinking of just spraying it black rather than removing it all together! I will go with Adrian flux next year :-D

To be honest most insurance companies will do absolutely anything to avoid paying out or fulfilling the terms of your policy in any way if they are called upon.

Declare absolutely everything otherwise they might be able to find a way out like the bunch of weasels they are.

Ashley :)

I have decided to stay away from external mods this year in light of the words i have read here, i am going to get the bodywork looking good again work on the interior, central locking, alarm etc then focus on mods next year :-D

I don't want to pay £800 a year and then not be able to claim because i changed the grille.

My mate crashed his corsa B a while back which he had lexus lights and a backbox on aswell as the usual sub and stuff he got paid out for that with no problems nothing declared oh and a K&N

i think you could take the polo and 1.0 badges off as like somebody else has said they can come off as also my mates came off from pressure washing the car

hope this helps
