it basiccly means that the engine forgets its idleing position , so you need a new throttle body.

so is it an expensive job

i wouldnt go accusing the throttle body straight away!

Checked out the earths? vacuum leak?

plenty of items to be looking at before you splash out on a rather expensive throttle body.

firstly pop the cover off the throttle body and give it a quick clean, Disconnect battery for 30 seconds then reconnect.

Sometimes the gunk on the TB gives a rough idle.

I had the same problem on my civic i had to change my carb then it ran fine again, got it from the scrappy for £30

tried the throttle body i cleaned it and checked the sensor and still no luck i have had to alter the throttle cable to make it tick ova but its guna hammer my fuel i need more input plz

I've got the same problem! :-(

Car is used every day with no problems for over a year.... get in it this morning and it wont idle. If I hold the revs then it runs fine but as soon as i try to let it idle it dies.

Did you have any luck fixing yours dude? If so then please post up what it was, I'm going to try the cleaning etc tomorrow on mine.

Today I took the throttle body off and cleaned it up. I also took the plastic cover off and sprayed some electrical cleaner stuff in there too.

Fitted it back on and it works but I now have a wandering idle!?

I idles at 900 rpm then you take it for a drive and it does a bit of a 1200-2000 rpm dance when you sit at traffic lights then dies down to about 1000-12000 rpm. If you turn it off and start it again then it sits at 900 rpm. GGGrrrrr! :x

I have a new temperature sender that I am going to go fit now just because I can and I have read that sometimes it fixes this problem...

Is this the list of things you have replaced?!

I didnt know the 1.4 6n had an air flow meter? It's just a throttle body on the manifold and theres only an air filter before that.

I do have a spare 1.4 16v (75bhp) 1999 Lupo engine that I can try the throttle body off, does anyone know if they are the same?

This is my girlfriends car so I need to get it running right really and asap as it's her only car :-(

i dont know if it has an air flow or not its what i was told the throttle body sensor or as its known the throttle potentiometer can not be replaced u have to change the throttle body but there is a lass on here with exact same fault she is avin rac to diagnose it 2day so when she finds out what it is shes guna let me know then ill let you know

Sweet. Please do!

I did think it could be the potentiometer when I was having a think about what to look at today while I was at work yesterday...

Like you say though it is fixed to the side of the throttle body. Thats the bit under the black plastic cover that I took off and sprayed the contact cleaner on which seems to have done some good but maybe not enough.

I'm hoping the Lupo one is the same although I can't remember if it was a cable or electric throttle :?:

Cheers for your help, With two brains we should get it sorted! Ha Ha !

Just found this on line while searching for the answer:

Fixed it in the end - I replaced the throttle body & gasket, the inlet manifold gaskets, and the vacuum hose that runs from the fuel pressure gauge to the inlet manifold. Seems to be totally fixed now so I guess it was a vacuum leak somewhere in the inlet manifold.

I had a look at the hoses and all seem fine although you cant see small holes I guess so I may replace that pipe. I have also read that the throttle body needs to be set with vagcom which I have so I may go plug it in and give that a go too. I guess it's like when you re set basic settings on the newer engines which does make sense if you have taken the body off and had a mess about with it....?

Again, I will let you know if I find the answer and get it fixed!

Oh and I found this thread on here too which started with the same problem and then it moved on to the revving problem I have..

Check this thread out...

I'm sure they dont have a air flow meter, if it is reving freely it is most probaly a air leak somewhere. did you take the throttle body off ( remove 4 bolts and and disconnet it) if you did make sure that the o ring is in tact and sits flush. also check all the air hose for holes or leaks, a few of them o mine were fucked and my mate changed them in 2 sec.

Right. I just swapped the temp sender over (re filled the water) and then disconnected the battery and left it while I gave the car a wash. So it was off for a good half hour.

When I reconnected the battery I turned the ignition on but did not start it. This way the potentiometer has time to adjust it's settings back to the basic settings as it should be. If you listen to the throttle body you can here it whirring and clicking as it does this. Leave the ignition on until it stops making the noises and then for at least a minute to make sure.

Then turn the ignition off. then back on and start the car... hey presto it is running fine 8-)

Well it is for now. I am going to drive it to work tomorrow and see how it goes. I have a feeling that it may be on it's way out but only time will tell. It starts, idles and runs fine now.

So all I did was:

Remove the throttle body

Clean the throttle body with the correct cleaner (throttle body / carb cleaner)

Remove the potentiometer cover

spray some electrical contact cleaner on the components, let it dry then replace cover (make sure the seal is sitting correctly)

Replace throttle body making sure the seal is sitting correctly. DO NOT forget to replace the earth lead on the bolt!

Then do the above battery disconnect procedure.

I also fitted a new temperature sender although I do not know if this helped solve the problem but I did it so it's on the list

It now starts and stops and idles at 900 rpm. It revs fine and does not idle erratically.

If this problem comes back then I will post on here again to let you know what happened and what I do next! (hopefully that wont happen though)

I am the girl having the sam trouble , i have had the RAC out again . had them out yesterday and the guy sprayed some cleaner somwhere under the cover and he then tighten the throttle cable , however this was only a temp measure. He has just been again and it most certain that my " IDLE CONTROL VALUE" has gone. they are about £28.00 for a new one. :)

Hey :-)

That would be the 'idle control valve' although I'm not sure where that would be as the idle is controlled by the potentiometer which is part of the throttle body...?

The cleaner will probably have made it work better as that is part of what is causing the problem but the throttle body will need re setting to clear all the trouble going by what I did today.

Let us know what happens if you get that part and what part number it is so we have some sort of reference to it.

I'm driving my girlfriends one to work tomorrow so will see how it goes. Fingers crossed.

My dad rang about and "idle control valve " today . He spoke to a few places including a VW dealer near to myself , apprently you cannot buy just the " idle contorl valve" you have to buy the complete unit ( throttle body included) for £400 ! although in the net they are seeing just an idle control valve for £28.50. .. i have drove the car a short distance today as not keen on driving to far . Car seems to be running okay , although the revs are sititng above 1,000 , i took the advice to reset by disconnecting the battery and unplugging the valve . when people are saying reset the throllte body , does this mean the cable? As the RAC man ajjusted my throttle cable made it tighter as a tempoary measure. thanks

Hey Polo chick.

Right a few questions.

Did the RAC man just adjust the cable to get the car running?

Since the car stopped idling has the throttle body been cleaned?

Is the car running fine with no problems other than when it stopped idling and does it run fine now apart from idling above 1000rpm?

PM me the answers if you like and then I will talk you through what to do to try to sort it out once I know what has been done so far :-)

Oh and mine is running fine now with no problems and it only cost a fiver to sort out :-)
