My girlfriend bought a 2001 6n2 1.0litre MPI with 67000 on the clock yesterday, we covered about 80 miles and it used half a tank of fuel...does anyone know any reasons for this happening..??

I was driving normally as I would in my own 1.0litre 6n, the tracking was off a good bit but i don't think it can affect the fuel consumption that much..

When did it last have a full service? (Filters, fluids, sparks)

Is it deffinately the fact its using fuel?? Couldnt be a problem with the mechanism that shows fuel level??

Got the same problem at the moment. It seems like its using fuel like nobodies business but its just my fuel level mech is fucked. Ummm could be running rich possibly, hole in the exhaust, cat could be fucked. Could be a number of resons matey. Id personally check the fuel level mech is working fine first. Spoekn to afew people since mines been playing up and it seems to be a common fault with alot of peole i talk to.

I'm sure its not the gauge we spent 50 quid filling the tank this morning...The previous owners have just had it serviced we have receipts for work too and the book says its not due another service until 75000...

Car isnt overheating though...or would it have to??

The thermostat was changed 2 days ago because the housing was leaking...

If the car thinks its colder than it is, it will use more fuel. What's the temperature gauge saying? It should sit around 90 once warm.

Maybe the thermostat was fitted wrong making the system over cooling?

The temp gauge is staying halfway and not rising above it so i'm assuming thats 90...

temperature gauge is seperate from the coolant temp sensor, coolant temp sensor tells the ECU when the engine is warmed up. temperature gauge runs off a seperate water supply iirc, and has a different sensor..

as chris.w said above, if the coolant temp sensor aint working, ECU will think the engine is still cold and so keep running rich.

its a common problem on 6Ns, and will probably be the reason you are eating fuel.
