Hey, I bought my first car today (a Polo). I just thought I'd introduce myself and my car as I reckon I'll be using the website a fair amount now.

My names Alex, I'm 18 and from Essex.

My Polo is an R Reg (1997) 1.4 model. It's metallic blue, got 121,000 miles on it. It has open air which is pretty awesome. Came with a years MOT and 6 months tax, set me back £700. I'll put some photos up once it has been valeted as the guy didn't have time to do it.

It all seems in good nick, got a few small problems with it: Front wheel bearings needs to be corrected. Back window water sprayer needs to be adjusted, Cigarette socket is broken and Central Locking doesn't work when opening the car.

- Any ideas on how much any of these problems would be to fix?

Welcome to Clubpolo Alex.

Adjusting the sprayer is a 2min job if its pointing the wrong way. You just stick a pin in the nozzle and move it to where you want it. The cigarette lighter may just have a blown fuse (30amp i think?).

As for the other two, not exactly sure what you mean by 'wheel bearing needs to be corrected' but if they're anything like mk3 items, they're a press fit which may mean a garage visit. The central locking may just be a wire off but I've never got to grips with one so I'm not exactly sure.

to my knowledge, the C/L is most likely the pump, which is behind the rear doorcard/back seat, bear in mind, this is as far as i know, I've got a mk3, so a 6n dude should be more knowledgeable than me :)

Its won't cost you more than £100 to get it all sorted out. As John 'Stresshead' has said above, the cigarette lighter might just be a fuse and adjusting the screen wash nozzle is as simple as putting a drowing pin,sewing pin in it and adjusting it to the correct psoition.

Central locking pumps are a common fault on these as they get wet and the like. I sold one last week for £20. It should be similar to that from a scrapyard or look in the for sale section on here.

The bearings are readily available from GSF and EuroCarParts if you require a new one. As said above its a press job so it will require you going to a garage to get the work carried out unless you have a press yourself.

Ahh okay the sprayer sounds like it can be easily fixed, I'll grab a pin later and give that a go.

I'll buy a new fuse for the cigarette lighter and see if that fixes the problem, if it doesn't what would need to be done?

I spoke to a mate briefly about the C/L and he said that it was probably just the pump that needs to be replaced. I'll probably take a trip down to a scrapyard soon and see what I can find.

The bearings definitely need to be sorted by a garage, I don't think it's anything major though. I'm expecting a £20 job or less.

I'm probably gonna take a look at a new gear stick when I'm down the scrappie, guessing they won't be much?

Are there any quick cosmetic fixes you can suggest that don't cost much?

well I assume the front wheel bearings need replacing as there's no adjustment or anything that can be done. It's going to cost more than £20, prob more like £100-£150. Bearings themselves are about £40-£50 for the parts and it's going to be a couple of hours labour.

My front wheel bearing needs doing too. To get it sorted you're looking at at least £50, because its an hours job plus the cost of the parts.

off topic but you are from colchester/ipswich ?? there like 15 miles apart ??

I got it wrong it isn't the bearing it's just the tracking that needs to be sorted... My bad.

Yer I live in Halstead which is about 20 minutes drive from Colchester. I think it was just a pre specified area that I just chose.

I'm gonna need to get it serviced does anybody know how much a standard service costs? I'm pretty sure my cam belt is going to need to be changed too just to be on the safe side - I've been told this is about £100?
