Car: Polo 6N0 1.4 AEX/DQW Manual Steering (Not Power Steering)

Problem: Small amount of slack in the steering rack, is NOT the track rod ends or any other part other than somthing inside the steering box it'self, everything else has been checked by a profesional mechanic.

Probable cause: Excessive wear on the shims underneath the steering rack within the box.

Question: Is it possible to gain easy(ish) access into the steering rack to re-shim the rack or is it going to be nessesarry to buy a new steering rack?

Is yes, then where can i buy the shims from?

have you tried adjusting the nut on the back of the rack behind the spline, it will take up slack across the lock but if it's only loose in the middle it can make the rack tight. other than that buy a new rack, they're not that expensive if you can find one.

Found an exchange parts rack for £50, gonna have to get it on payday, joys of not having power steering

I've had a look in elsaWIN for the tool to adjust it with, what to use etc. it shows an adjustment point to the nearside of the end of the steering collum, with a plate covering it, there is no such plate on my steering rack, simply a hole, any clues as to what to put in said hole to adjust the rack?
