Do Non-Hubcentric spacers cause wheel wobble?

Hi, as above really.

I'm wanting to run some 5mm spacers on the front, but they aren't available in the hubcentric option.

Would this cause wheel wobble, as the wheels will no longer be on the hub but just held in place by bolts?

Yeah, they will.. They'll also put extra pressure on your hub and disc brakes.. I found this out the hard way when one disc cracked once.

In that case mate, I won't bother with them :)

Even 5mm ones? Didn't realise it would cause strain and pressure on the hub with such a small amount!

No they won't Wobble mate not if the bolts are correctly torqued up! 5mm isn't alot either! You can put 20mm non hubcentrics on and they should be perfectly safe as long as there fired correctly! Hubcentrics are an aid

to fitting as they give you the hub to locate the wheel on! Just like spigot rings! Not needed at all but very useful if you don't have a torque wrench! (can be bought very cheaply of eBay! And just for reference polos take 82ftlbs/110nm of pressure on each wheel bolt!) I'm sure hub centric will help wheel bearing lifespan etc but they are all gonna put extra strain on the wheel bearings you will still be able to put the wheel on the hub just won't have as much of it to sit on!

bit of a hit and miss.

Some people say there fine , some dont.

Iv ran them for about 7 months on my polo with no problems whatsoever.

Bearing in mind these were 10mm ones aswell.

So I should be fine then with 5mm spacers for the front with 31mm bolts, just need tightening up properly!

correct my man! This topic always gets fought over but at the end of the day it boils down to physics and correct wheel fitting etiquette! Should always be tightened up by hand at diagonals ie

stud 1 first, then stud 4 diagonally opposite, then stud 2/3, then it's diagonal opposite!

then repeated with a torque wrench! (kwik fit mans buzz gun isn't the right way! Lol)

What you have to remember is that some people run mini fitment wheels without wobble bolts, meaning there must be slight play in the wheels fitment, without hubcentric there is no way to align the centre bore, no matter how tight you do the wheel bolts. Bolts slide into holes and always have some slight play, nothing is a perfect fit on mass production cars, everything is made to have slight tolerances. Also, all the pressure is transferred from the centre of the wheel to the outside of where the wheel fastens to the hub. Uneven pressure isn't good, especially with low offset wheels adding even more pressure.

Remember those chrome wheels I had on my Old GT? I had 5mm spacers on the front of that. It broke some disc brakes, twice! I may have been unlucky as with a different set of wheels I ran 10mm non-hubcentric ones on the rear with no issues other than vibrations at 70mph+

you'll be 5mm off the hub so spigots won't be that usefull anyway.

So how comes I know a fair few people who run rims without spigots (a few have 3mm and 5mm spacers) but correctly torques up and have no wobbling, I'm not arguing about the pressure thing as I am in agreement that they will give mor pressure but againg that's down to physics and leverage! The reason the mini rims fit without wobblebolts is nothing to do with the hubs etc it's that the bolt holes in the wheels are wider than the actual bolt so they can accomodate that extra 1mm or whatever!

Hmm just because there's no wobbling , doesn't mean its safe, there's gonna me alot more stress going through the set-up with incorrect bore size + spacers.

Actually, thinking about it , thats extremely dangerous lol.

There's no way of centering and there's dramatically increased stress.

Oh and sorry centre bore is there to aid fitting of the wheels not for them to centre on! Otherwise we'd be bolting the centre of the wheel up!

And like I said there will be more stress but that's down to leverage!

its for both really.

The bore of the wheel will be 57.1 and then the diamiter of the hub being something like 57mm so that the wheel is nice and snug and central.

However they are NOT for taking any weight.

I'm not an expert on this topic so dont start havin a go but..

Why would they be sold if they werent safe, surely if they damaged your hub, disc or whatever surely thats the fault of the manufacturers inadequate designs an not the fact that you bought an trusted the product to satisfy the basic job it was designed for.. in this case 'provide extra width on the hub in a safe manor'??.

I just thought hubcentric meant centre of the hub an thats why they come in 4x100 or 4x108 whereas cheaper none hubcentric ones are universal an therefore not hubcentric??

Well polos and most cars are lug centric meaning the lug nuts do the centering, hubcentrics basically have an extended hub center on them which make fitting therefore centering easier! (not actually centering onthe hub bit but they give the wheel a central osh point from which to tighten them up correctly) think about it. The centre nor of a polo is 57mm and the centre bore of a polo rim is 57.1mm when they are lugcentricly fitted there will be a gap of 0.1mm between the hub and the wheel!

Incorrectly tightened wheels With a centre bore biggerthan 57.1mm will wobble as they have slot more room to move you wouldn't notice the wheel moving 0.1mm therefore no wobble!

I think with 5mm spacers the wheel might just be still sat on the front hubs, but I will hold fire for now and ask a few mates with MK5's what they're experiences are etc!

Indy if I were you Id buy/borrow a torque wrench anyways for working on the car but they are great for wheels I bored my own BMW mini rims out to alot more than 57.1mm (getting some

sipgots made for easy fittment eventually!) and torqued them on when for a 20mile blast and they were solid as a rock! Then I took em off before I got caught as I wasn't insured for mods back then!

All you will be taking a risk on is the spacers really as the wrench always comes

in handy! Has so many uses! Undoes bolts propper easy coz the shaft is longer, Personal protection device/pikey prod (bit like a cattle prod but makes a better noise and hurts the pikey alot more! Lol) thats just a few advantages I have noticed since owning one! Lol!

I had 5mm spacers on a car for about year, it didnt wobble, it wasnt dangerous (time and mileage of the use proved this by the fact I'm still friggin alive) and the car went through an MOT ok with them on

had 5mm non hubcentrics on my car for 5 years, no wobble, no cracked discs, no epic wheel failure. they are as safe or unsafe as the person fitting the wheels back on and doing the bolts up
