Right, first up, hello people! New here, so please be gentle!

I'm Sam, a 23 year old numpty from Nuneaton. Been into classic cars since forever, and had a Beetle as a first car in 2005. Have really been enjoying the shows, and the clubs, and everything else the aircooled scene has to offer, although I love watercooled cars as well - I have a K70 as a long term project. Unfortunately, said Beetle failed its MOT spectacularly a few weeks ago, and with the K70 still a long way off completion, I needed a go-between car to get around in.

I bought this 1991 1 litre saloon for £395, was on autotrader for less than an hour before I bought it! 12 months MOT, some tax, 91k, most of its service/MOT history and original receipt of sale included! I love it already - my original plan was to run it around for a month or two whilst the Beetle was patched up, but now I've decided to keep it for a while and give the Beetle more extensive repairs...

Here it is:

Has a few minor scabs, but the paint is 95% original...

Interior is basically immaculate, apart from one seat-tilt knob missing:

45bhp of fury. A massive step up from my Beetle's 44bhp... :grin:

Boot area's very nice, all the original tools, and no rot hiding under the carpet...

Current plans? None really. I really need to divert all my spare resources and get the other two cars repaired before I even think about doing anything to this one. Best case scenario, this'll be a year at least. However, AFTER that.... who know? For the moment though it's Rock, Stock, and 5 non-smoking owners.

Will use this thread for Polo updates only though. Despite not having any major plans for it, I do plan to do a few paint touch-ups when the weather gets a bit nicer. :)

I used to have a mk3 saloon the same colour as that as a daily driver, was a great car, never let me down. It was the 1.3 though so boasted a massive 55bhp

the beetle is lovely, is it a 1303? what was the fail sheet like? i took my yellow un for its first mot in 5 years and it got 40 faults, three pages haha.

k70 too, pure blast from the past!

loon could be tidy outside with a little bit of work, looks clean in the engine and inside, and will make a good reliable daily motor. i ran one for 2 months and it cost me about 20 quid in service parts, bar that its served me well despite the niggles which i can deal with haha

Beetle's a 1300, beam front suspension. :) Fail sheet - back brakes not working at all, front brakes low efficiency, needs an entire driver's side floorpan, beam mount has gone frilly, and some other bits and pieces. Could be patched up over a weekend, but I've patched it through its last few MOTs, so I'm going to give it a proper body-off going over.

Polo actually IS pretty tidy outside, just those two scabs letting it down!

do you know Guy or Keiron from Nuneaton? My housemate and a fair few mates in manc are from Bedworth and Nuneaton originally. I love me a good old Rooster Wrap!

Names don't ring a bell. I know quite a few VW peeps in the area though, mostly the aircooled lot.

So, I've had the car a few months now. I said I had no plans for it, and indeed I didn't. But, somehow I've ended up with a set of 6x14 Compomotive MSs for it. A friend was getting rid of them cheap, so I thought I might as well.

They look like this. You'll note there's not much dish - there isn't ANY actually, they're flat faced:

They won't be going on the car just yet - all the tyres are mullered, and far too big because they came off a Jetta. I did however do a test fit on one side of the Polo:

Personally I'm rather pleased with them. I know dish, and stretch, and insane poke is where most people go these days, but I quite like the flat wheel look. In addition to getting new, lower profile tyres (I want a stock rolling radius so the speedo doesn't get thrown out), I'm also planning on painting the wheels either gloss black or white. I'm leaning towards black at the moment.

And yes, I am planning on lowering it, but NOT slamming. Just something subtle to close up those comedy arch gaps a bit. :) I hear a 60/40 shock and spring kit is good for subtlety and gap-closing whilst still being reasonably comfy to drive?

This is all going to happen over the course of a few months though - need to put aside monehs from my next couple of wage slips to buy the stuff. Plus, I'm partway through rebuilding the K70's brakes and poking out the Beetle's floor rust, so my spare time's taken up with that right now! So it'll be staying stock a little while longer yet...

still not going to sell me this lol :p

liking the car mate, lower profiles and a 60/40 drop should look great :thumsup:

i'd paint the front badge black too

Front badge is getting done when I do the wheels - after much thinking and photoshop experimenting, I've decided the wheels are going black. Talking of which...

Gave one of the Compos a wash, a going over with some wet and dry, and then a quick n dirty coat of black. This isn't the final finish, I'll be sanding this one down and doing it again properly when I do the others - this is just a sort of test run, a "proof of concept" if you will.

I think they look great in black myself!

(Ignore the massive tyre, as I said before all the tyres are going soon!)

I'm going to wait until the old tyres are off before I spray all the wheels properly, because apparently painted wheels often get chipped when the tyres are being taken off, even by pros.

Any thoughts/criticisms welcome. :)

Had ANOTHER change of heart and decided to just paint the wheels with the old tyres on. Means I don't have to go through the hassle of masking up (a real ballache to mask, tyres are!), hence the massive overspray on the tyres seen here:

Apparently if the tyre shop are careful when they change the tyres for the new ones (I've decided on 165/60/14s - 55s would have been preferable but cost a massive amount more!) then they can do it without chipping the paint. That said, if they do chip the wheels, it shouldn't be too hard to touch them up. I think they look even better in black, although there's some orange peel I need to sort out when they've had a few days to harden. I'm not going for a pro finish, the car's never gonna be a show winner - I just want to get them looking as good as I can.

Oh, and I had a bit of black left over, so I sanded the grille badge down and did that too:

Well, 10 months on and I can report absolutely nothing has gone wrong with this car. It's an excellent daily for the money. Mod-wise, nothing much has happened either. Only thing I've added outside is red trim to the bumpers. You can see it in this slightly belated pic of the Polo in the snow:

That's one kind of ice - which leads me neatly onto the other kind. The standard Blaupunkt pull-out cassette player was just about dead, it only made noise of of one side and every time you changed volume it was accompanied by an ear splitting crackle from both speakers. So, for Christmas, I got me a nice Sony CDX-GT35U head unit:

SO SO much better, I has radio and can use my iPod via the Aux port (unfortunately it doesn't support iPod via USB. No matter, Aux is fine with me.) Just need to get some better speakers now, got some being delivered next week. Just some cheap 3.5" jobbies to fit where the standard ones go, anything's got to be better than the cardboard stock ones!

I know I need to get my thumb out of my backside and start doing some proper work on it, but money's been short and I'm waiting til I'm 25 in May. Cheaper modified insurance.

Very clean looking loon. I also drive a mk3 loon as a daily, have done for many years and they are very reliable, always start up first time in any weather and have never broken down on me

i also drive a mk3 loon daily although mines not standard anymore its still a very reliable car and i still stick by what i shouted loons ftw lol nice to see its been looked after these cars may not look much but they are getting alot harder to come by so nice job bud hope to see you and the loon at some shows this year

The mk3 saloon was the least produced out of all the saloons so there will come a time soon where they may be hard to come by

Time for another complete non-update! Managed to track down a proper VW rear spoiler for the loon (mk2 Formel E I believe?). Took ages to find one. Fitted it, looks like this:

I know what you're (possibly) thinking and yes - next thing is get bootlid resprayed and some touch-ups done!

Then... and only then... we can finally see about some springs and shocks... (I put cleanliness before lowness!)

You wanna get that rust around the rear lights sorted asap. Had similar on my old MK2.. was a ruin lol

Yes, the rust in the rear panel is only minimal surface rust at the moment... figured I'd be best nipping it in the bud now rather than having the car's back end disintegrate later on! Might cost a bit to fix even now, so the suspension will have to wait.

Speaking of never seeing things around, you still got your Jetta? Haven't seen that in ages, used to see it all the time. Well, I used to see a very fast cloud of black exhaust going down the road, I assume there was a Jetta in there somewhere!
