VW Polo non starter

Featured Replies

Hi all - looking for somebody that knows about the VW Polo 6n2. one that looks like this. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:VW_...nt_20080717.jpg

Its a 1.4 Se 16v on a W (2000) plate

Picked it up before christmas - non runner. Previous owner had it towed to the garage where they told her it had bent a valve. However, on inspection, I cannot see that the cambelt has snapped. I asked the owner what happened when it broke down what symptoms were. 'It was rattling for about a month' (well maintained eh?) then all of a sudden it cut out. I have been under the dash and relay no 410 was clicking. I have recharged the battery but all that comes on the display is that SERVICE INT (fair enough), but when you turn the ignition on, digital display seems to fade.

Has anybody come across this kind of thing before, and does anybody know what relay 410 is on these? I have searched on the VW forums etc, to no avail, but I have gathered this relay is some kind of control relay for all the system (ECU etc)

Can anybody help or give me any pointers? Thanks in advance

If it was rattling for ages, could it have been the tappets wearing? And then, a tappet finally decided to die and too a valve out with it?

Shot in the dark tbh.. I'm sure someone else on here will have a better idea. How exactly did the garage diagnose it as being a bent valve?

I don't see how they could as they only took the cambelt cover off. Surely to look for a bent valve you would have to take the top off? (correct me if i'm wrong). I think mebbe they just said that in order to do her out of some money?

Hmm they could have done some sort of compression test, or a vacuum test. I think there are ways of checking these things but if you can speak to them it would be better to clarify.

As you say though, they may have lied about it.. either to do her out of some money or to hide a potentially worse problem? And also as you say, if there wasn't any piston / valve contact I don't really know how it could have only damaged one valve lol.

Have you checked that the cam timing is actually all set up right? When was the belt last done / touched?

in ordar to check the vavles ud have ro remove the head, how meny miles as it gt

on the clock

a cylinder leakage test could have been done to diagnose a bent valve with out taking the head off mate but i dont see how only 1 valve would be bent

leak down would have said if there's a problem, but it won't way what it is - only way to tell if there's a bent valve is to dismantle the top end (either strip camshafts and followers out, or pull the head off - head off is a safer bet)

Display fading sounds like an electrical gremlin, rattling could be anything, mine rattles like hell, but it's the exhaust against a heatshield and I can't be arsed to sort it (it's not hurting anything and it stops with revs)

Does anybody know what relay 410 controls?

it is difficult to say without full number of your 6N2xxx and engine code (or VIN number) but i found for one of the 6N2 cars that 410 is fuel pump relay.
