hi,

been using redex for ages and recently, i doubled the dosage (i wasn't paying attention and it was dark). i've done this a few times and each time, after about 60 miles i get the Engine Management Check light on (the one that looks like an Engine / Gearbox with check wirtten on it). it goes off if i disconnect battery for about 30 mins but am starting to think there's a more serious underlying problem than just an annoying light. Also, No engine mods but a new exhaust (standard, fitted about 6 months ago).

is the car still running fine? no erratic idle or owt? it's just that light can come on when the lamba sensor has gone, i guess it comes on when any sensor goes down mind but if it's still running right i think you can rule that one out at least.

if you can give more details of how the car is running ect maybe some one could be more help for than me

Yep, the car still runs fine (but tracking is out... Not related) (Fixed ) When i had a new exhaust system fitted (front to back as it was all knackered) (standard) i had a new Oxygen Sensor (i know it's new and i think he meant the Lamba sensor) put on as the old one had a small hole in it, so i'm fairly sure it isn't that.

Occasionally, when oil is running low, when i'm sat in neutral it tends to tick over at a steady 800rpm and then suddenly drop to about 450 and then back to 800, top oil up - all ok.

My car does have some (probably unrelated) 'faults'. for example, when sat in neutral with clutch depressed, gearbox makes no noise, when i lift clutch (still in neutral) it seems as if the cogs in the gearbox want to start spinning and it makes a bit of a funny noise.

Also having some weird electrical bugs (As Seen In This Thread...)

Redex is best used as a once now and then sort of thing rather than regularly. It partly works as an octanicity booster, so it's possible your engine's been a bit confused as to what you're feeding it. I'd be inclined to run a couple of tanks of normal fuel through and get your fault codes read and cleared.

Also i see you said 'when the oil is running low'. Thats not really a good sign if its regularly losing oil. Although probablyb unrelated to your current problem, i would want to get that sorted too. A healthy engine should not lose oil

ok, my last tank of Fuel+Redex was about 2 months ago and i've reset the ECU since then (disconnect the battery trick!) and it's not come back so i'll use redex sparingly (as per guidelines) whenever i next use it.

it doesn't regularly lose oil (it uses a bit every now and again to keep engine lubed up (as you know)) i've not topped it up for about 6 months or more but it could pobably do with a top up.

The gearbox problem is probably the release bearing.

If its clutch release bearing it would usually make a noise when the pedal is down, as its then when its actually in contact with the clutch and so moving.

The noise will be the input shaft into the gearbox.

Check the box oil is full and is not too shitty.

I had a similiar sounding problem in a (dare i say it...) Peugeot i owned. It turned out that the release bearing was a bit nakered and after changing this and the clutch i found out the gearbox was nakered. This isnt a massive job if you can do some work under the bonnet (and a lot cheaper than a garage, i got a recon gearbox from a scrappy for £85!). However it does take a lot of time and effort (a haynes manual definately helps!) and if your not sure if it is the gearbox then get a garage to diagnose first! Anyway hope you get it sorted buddy! :)

you sure? the 6n2? i'm sure i've seen others do it and it's worked for them but i could be mistaken.

all i know for definate is that if i disconnect battery for about 30-45 mins then reconnect, the light goes off instead of being constantly on so it must do something...

how do i check the oil (noob, first car, not familiar with ANYTHING mechanical...)

The mile-o-meter is just a hair away from 89.5k mi but don't know if anything's been replaced (i don't think it has)

i tested with vag com as well?

plugged code reader 4 errors...

left battery off for 2 hours plugged it back in scanned no errors?
