got a new starter motor to fit to my 1.4 1997 (6n?) polo. what tools do i need and is it quite easy cause I'm not exactly edd china. lol.

13 mm spanner or socket is what you need to get the bolts undone and is fairly easy to get out

Its relatively easy compared to say... changing the clutch. Put the front of the car on axle stands with handbrake hard on, unbolt the power cable from the back of the starter motor and unclip the solenoid plug. Loosen the 3 bolts (the starter motor is on the back of the engine) and one or two of the bolts are realllly long and are undone on the gearbox side. Don't fully undo the bolts until you are under the car supporting the weight of the starter motor. Undo the bolts fully and gently guide the starter motor downwards until its out.

To fit the new one, do the above in reverse. Apply some common sense (i.e. be very careful not to knock/put any strain on electrical cables or any pipes/cables)

cheers guys, iv just bought a haynes manual so will look at that, and iv got ramps to put the front of the car up, oh and iv bought a new socket set as well. lol. fingers crossed.
