Coilovers bouncey as hell!

Featured Replies

Just fitted coilovers and had them wound down really low so today I wound them up and I have found them to be horrid and bouncey!!

Just wondered they have only been on a day will they calm down?

Is there any way to give them more travel? I thought about takin the top nuts off the front and then back the rubber top mount off it will lengthen the spring, is it possible?

just something you have to put up with for going low I'm afraid

they will settle mate but you will still bounce everywhere pal

Thing is there not that low now! Was much better wound nearly to the bottom?? Should I be leaving my seat after going over a man hole cover?? Lol

ahahah yes u should i did when i wound mine up for the mot, it goes harder when you go lower

But this has gone harder by going up lol! I'm gonna try giving the springs abit more travel by backing the rubber mount off and then bolting the top mount back up!

I have the same thing happening to me bud.

Only fitted them a couple weeks ago but am getting used to the bouncing around, the sore lower back after a longgg journey and the harsh ride. But I'm not complaining 8-)

Just been out for a drive and it seems to be the backs that are really bouncy they are lower than the fronts is this the problem? Should they be level? Anyone tried the method I've been thinking about???

ahhh reverse rake effect, dont know if this will effect it like that mate, it shouldnt, if you have coilovers wind them all to the same height pal, what you mean the rubber mounts ?? the bit that has the rotating bearings bit in?? or the bit that sits on the top of the metal cone shape at the top of the coilover.

for the front I ment take the first front bolts off and then there's just the bolt that holds the bearing and top rubber on, back that off so that the top spring cup will be pushed up but the strut will stay in the same place as there still bolted to the hub and that will give the spring more travel?

For the back undo both top bolts and drop the rear beam abit then tighten them up?

The springs should keep the tension as they will expand and there for give more travel?

You shouldn't be going over a manhole cover!!!

you coul;d try it pal, but i thought that would put more strain on the coils, therefore causing the coils or the strut to be damaged or weaking other bushes around the suspension quicker than usual, if you get me.

Lol it wasn't too raised or dipped I checked before I went over it haha

I'll have a go at backing them off abit in a few day after I make it level and see if it settles!

i fitted some about 2 weeks ago now and they are alot less bouncy. also getting rid of wheels with ballon tyres has helped if you have got ballons on.

man up

lol

How long were you running it wound all the way down for? You sure you haven't just popped the shocks or something?

  • Author

Ran it for about 20 miles wasn't hard then but the springs were fully extended so they could take the shock, I have tried pushing the back down but it's rock hard the fronts are fine ATM I can sit on my bonnet and they will go down slightly but the rears are causing the problem afaik!

i take it you have trimmed your bumpstops down? sounds like your on them!

No I haven't touched them just greased them up and fitted them! Yes it feels like there's no travel and it's bouncing off the bump stops, I'll take a couple of pic of how high/low it is later on! It's really bizareas I have gone over bumps and the fronts dampen fine not too much bouncing but abit stiffer which I was prepared for but the rears bounce for a good couple of seconds after the actual dip or bump on the road!

you are definately riding on the bumpstops - you always get more travel on the fronts than the rear before you hit the bumpstops.

take 20mm off the rear bumpstops and it'll stop bucking.

Coilovers are fun like that been in a few cars where I'm lucky not to fly out the sunroof!

Ridiculously bouncey but thas sometimes the downfall of havin coilovers..

But when the chicks are in the car an the boobs bouncing.. great times! They probly need some gettin used to?

Lol! Way back when I put my first set of coilies on (mk2 Golf 1.6) I had trouble focusing on the speedo! As most folk have said, you'll get used to an impacted spine pretty soon.

ahaha yes boobies, i sometimes give my mum and her mate a lift to town when they go out and her mate has massive tits, i can just see them bouncin in the rear view mirror
