Who carries one?

I have for a year now and had to use it yesterday to put out a metro, drove past and could see flames under the engine so pulled over quick and jumped out with the extinguisher in hand and put it out,

If i hadnt it probably would have gone well up before the fire brigade got there, had a fuel leak but luckily i got the flames out before it all caught!

Had my doubts as to whether i really needed one but I'm definately refilling it and always keeping one in my cars just in case! you never know!

So, anyone else carry one all the time?

i used to keep one in my car but one time i picked up a girl and she saw it and asked what it was for and i had to reply with " well its in case my car sets on fire" the look on her face was priceless :-D

i had to use it when i started a small fire in the garage once :p

I always have one. but its in the boot so i guess by the time you have got it out its too late.

May mount it somewhere in the car rather than in the boot.

Yeah i keep mine in the centre console so its right at hand :)

It makes sense to have one, personally i think things like that and reflective jackets etc should be compulsory in this country, may save a few lives!

I carry two - one 1.75l AFFF job (have to for rally regs) and a smaller dry powder job

Mines a 1 litre dry powder, suprised me how quickly it was all spunked out, might go a size or two up, make it more effective :)

Mine's a 2 litre pop bottle full of water, also works for topping up your wipers.

Used it once when my old mk2 split a fuel line and it didn't work bad tbh.

I've got one in the centre console probably just like you Matt, The first thing I bought after seeing Grungeisdead's Kermit car go up in flames..

Yeh same as me, best place so you can grab it quick if yours goes up!

my mate popped over to my house a year or so back with a mk1 escort mexico, he was on the way home from buying it. as he pulled out of my street he nipped the clutch and light up the rear wheels, 10 seconds later i get a call him shouting down the phone 'help!' so i ran up the road to see what the problem was and there he is with the bonnet up trying to piss on his engine to extinguish the flames that were lapping out of the bay!

turns out someone had fitted the fuel line to short and when he nipped the clutch it popped of spraying the whole bay in petrol, it didn't take long before it got on the dizzy and went up.

well we stood there and watched the front end burn out before someone arrived with a couple of buckets of water, since then i always carry one and have one in each shed too.

You never know whats going to happen dude, could have an accident and catch fire, could have a part break and cause a fire

cant assume that because your car is all up to scratch that it wont ever catch fire

I think there is a distinction here between people who roll with carbs and injection. Doing a carb conversion is always going to increase the risk in terms of general teething problems, leaks, loose full lines etc. and I suppose twin carbs will increase that further. My car is running rich and will be re-jetted eventually but having the extinguisher is good insurance.

I suppose being aware of these risks from a hands on sensory perspective makes you respect driving more in general especially with older cars. It's amazing how people don't have a perspective on how volatile petrol can be going buy some the age old U-tube nonsense (remember the guy with the bonfire that went off like an atomic bomb).

i remember in a car park once after swimming a car went up randomly, Just if someone had one then, A Rover would have been saved.

Should have pushed it into the pool

1 behind each seat.

it might not be your car you have to save, think how close we all camp in shows etc.

genesis: those are a myth if you havnt found one yet then it never existed

lad in work lost his car a few months back, it just randomly decided to self-combust in the car park

I've used 4 in the past, 1 on my own car when something got caught in the exhaust tunnel and went up. other 3 on other peoples cars.

i cant get my head round why you would make a car so you cant carry a spare? whats there instead?
