I am currently fitting an R click remote upgrade to my polo 9n, I have currently managed to splice into the right wire for unlocking and locking the doors, with a 180 ohm resistor on the unlock wire, and have got that working fine, (just need to hardwire and solder it all in properly, and find a suitable ground and 12v)

But am not sure where to tap in to the indicators/ hazard lights and what colour wires to look for?

As well as this what wires to splice into to get the windows roll up/down to work?

And how hard is it to run the wires to the boot and hook up the boot popper?

Where did you find that wire, Jon? I read on this board that it is the Blue/White wire. I've had trouble in finding the right one and have tried a few Blue/Whites around there but none of them locked or unlocked when I grounded the wire as a test?

I've tried the loom under the driver's door sill, and the loom that appears to come out of the driver's door and meets a larger loom apparently going to the fusebox.

I found a +ve and ground on the bank of connectors under the dash - they are easier to wire to because you can disconnect the connector and splice into the wire in the open without damaging nearby wires. I used connector XS4 T18/5 and T18/8 for +ve and -ve respectively.

In my searches I also found the pin out for that bank of connectors (attached) which might prove useful for future wiring.

Hey, the blue/white wire I spliced into was the one coming out of the drivers door, when you take of the panel around the bonnet release, you can see it just their in the small bundle that joins the large bundle.

I just spliced in to that one, only seems to work when the driver's door is shut though.

And if your using an rclick set, (you probably already know this) but both yellow and yellow/black need to be ground as well.

And I got bored of finding a good power source, so in the end I spliced into the brown plug, just behind the purple code reading connector. (turns out it was for the heated rear windscreen, so upped the fuse to cope with both)

I do remember this as I couldn't get 180 ohms to work at all. The cynical side of me wondered if it was someone pushing duff data to preserve a business but this cannot be substantiated.

I bought a variable resistor from Maplin and wibbled it until I got a result. 180 ohms way under. I measured 420 ohms in the end. Try that for a start.

A variable is about another 30pence so I'd go for that if you are in a shop. If you are at home, make up some resistors in series to a value around 400 ohms (I stopped when it worked, I wasn't very scientific and perhaps should have continued to see what the upper and lower limits were). Wattage was whatever I found, I don't think it's too important as it's just for a sense wire - so perhaps start at quarter watt. I think I used a UH23a or something similar.

I should add I have no qualification whatsoever in this, I am just saying what worked for my car.

Okay thanks for the help, just to clarify, it would be the resistor that is the problem, right ? Because I can get my car to lock via the remote and it does the indicator flash thing, but when I press the unlock button, the indicators flash but the car doesnt unlock.

If that does sound like it is a resistor fault, am I able to get any ohm resistor aslong as its over 400ohm and any wattage and any material (ie metal film, carbon film, ceramic cement etc..)

Hi Liam,

Don't worry about connecting it all up to the remote harness just yet, try touching the blue white wire (the sense wire) directly to ground and check if it the locks change (try it with the central locking locked and then unlocked to be sure) and then via the resistor to change the state again. Perhaps there's something wrong with the remote's wiring so it's worth isolating the resistior issue from the remote.

When you have found the right value resistor (that 430 looked a close match), you'll be able to lock and unlock the doors simply by touching the wire directly to ground and then via the resistor. Once you have that sorted, the rest is just wiring of the remote unit and easy to check through.

No dude, tap into the wire. Like a capital T

The wire continues on its merry journey unabated, we simply apply the earth or earth via the resistor to make the locks change

So earthing without a resistor should lock/unlock then putting the resistor in should do the opposite of without a resistor ?

So without a resistor, earthing it locks my car, with the 430ohm resistor, earthing it unlocks my car

I have now fixed the resistor to the unlock wire on the rclick unit, i first tapped the lock wire into the blue/white wire, this locked the car (without pressing any buttons), I then tapped the unlock wire with resistor into the blue/white wire, nothing happened and then through annoyance I ripped off the lock wire (leaving the unlock wire still there) the car then unlocked, what does it sound like the problem is ?

Ahhh so that's how it's supposed to be done, I've been tapping them in separately, if it works after I have done this, seriously, I could kiss both of you :)

So it's all working OK now ???

Glad you got it sorted, basically it's always worth breaking the solution down to manual operation and then automatic. Out of interest I wonder which values of resistor work on your car to operate the locks. I stoppped at 4120 ohms.
