And epic arch gap!

DSC06213.jpg

Got some BBS Ras on the way plus a PhilJ 60/40 kit.

Not looking to completely deck it but want to improve handling a bit and get rid of hte dreaded arch gap!

List of things to do in the next few weeks/months:

New Outer Cvs

New Camshaft Pulley

Lower it and topmounts while I'm there

Check the thermostat- it runs quite cold and heard a horror stroy about dealers taking the stat out to hide headgasket symptoms. Problem is i have just had the cambelt and water pump done so dont really wanna do another coolant change.

Gearbox and engine oil change

Plugs, Leads Dizzy Cap

Wire in my headunit that doesnt want to plug and play for some reason

And gotta patch a small hole in the exhaust.

Feel free to comment and offer advice!

Marcus

Sort of update. no pics though!

Yer it is more than 40... i got the wrong shocks on it... they are 6n ones! lol

Was meant to be putting the correct rear shocks on this weekend... got 1 done yesterday then went out today and nearly died!

When people say "dont jack your car up on a slope" please listen to them!

Mine was on a bit of camber (you can see the road in the previous pics)... well i was jacking it up and it seemed solid.

So reached under to put an axle stand under and it fell off while i was half-under it.

Luckily i got the axle stand placed under the beam and it ended up on that but it was a close 1 as the wheel was off and could have ended very badly!

On a better note.. got a some GT clocks on the way so il have a rev counter! This is the first car i have had without 1 (even my beetle had one!) and it has been so annoying so very excited about that!

Then.... i think a 1.4 16v conversion is on the way.

Itl be a slow build and lots of questions will be asked! But i hope ot keep this thread updated for others to follow!

Correct suspension now on.

Being at Uni sucks balls... i had to shave about 3mm off of the sleeve and had to buy an angle grinder to do it!

If i had been back home i would have had about 5 or 6 people i could have rung!

Ah well... need to give it a bit of time to grow on me as i actually preferred the look of it before but I'm sure i will come around to it!

So... got the GT clocks fitted. That was so easy! Was trying to do it properly with the removal tools then just reached in the headunit gap and pushed the clip from there. Took about 5 minutes to do it that way!

Now the AFH conversion is starting for real!

Need to source a few more bits:

Engine itself (1.4 16v AFH)

Mk2 Dizzy, Coil, Ignition Loom and Ignition block thing.

Late Mk3 Polo Starter motor

If you have any of these for sale please PM me!

Couple of questions... just incase someone knowledgabel comes across the thread!

1. I know most people use T-pieces to feed fuel to the carbs but is it not better to get a regulator so there is actually a direct flow?

2. Will my current gearbox be ok? Its 5 speed but i think the ratios are different/better in a GT box?

Quick photo update with my mates Mk1 Cab

So managed to get it barely running and limped it to a RR:

Through a mixup between me and the rolling road guy we didnt quite get it perfect, after considering a Boggs Bros trip the guy (Tom) got wind that I wasnt completely happy and offered to have another look for me. Went up there today expecting an hour long session fine tuning but now that Tom knew exactly what I wanted (and i knew what I wanted) he spent pretty much the whole day on it for me. Real nice guy, great proffessional and it was running great by the end!

Rolling Road (turn down speakers just incase)

So with a 123.something BHP reading and a much much much better mid range fuelling I came away a happy boy!

Drove off into the sunset with a massive grin, drove for 6 miles and it was great. Responsive, pulling loads better and the revs were a fair bit lower so was able to cruise without sitting at 4k. Really please with it.... then the inevitable happened!

The whole day of runs (not exagerrating he must have done between 15 and 20 runs) had taken its toll on the coil so it decided to ejaculate its juices all over the king lead and down into the Dizzy. The AA guy was a legend and we had a right laugh on the way back to my house so that cheered me up.

I was gutted but then realised that it could have gone during the day and left me in a right state at the rollers so it was perfect timing really so now i just need to get a new coil and I am back to happy days. (Ready for the Super Nationals next weekend and Action the weekend after.

If something was going to go wrong... it couldnt really have gone wrong any better if that makes sense?!

Super sweet mate, sounds sexy as on the rollers, can't wait for a proper ride in it!

Cheers EZ, bet the forum name is lost on everyone here! lol.

I also especially like the way your pic makes your car look amazingly cool but at the same time, its only 20% of your car! 8-)

And just for the record, the breakdown wasnt a breakdown, just an excuse to give my car the gangster lean that only the AA can provide!

Good result mate! Standard engine? Whats your clearance like between the manifold and anti-roll bar?

I expect so, we can thank Sam for the photo, fisheye I think and everything B&W except for the Sabelt logo, a quality job!

How long until the new coil gets to you, bet you can't wait for a proper long drive!

Hey Marcus, With the exception of the coils going sounds like a good day. Glad Tom sorted you out. Did you get a shot of the new graph now all is sorted to compare?

Cheers

Yes mate standard engine. Did all the cambelt, water pump etc but didnt actually rebuild it like a lot of people have done on here. Think thats probbo where i have lost the 3 or 4 ponies that a couple of others have found.

The ARB is on the manifold at the moment, doesnt make too much difference except sounding a little dodgy on idle so not done anything about it yet. Just needs a blowtorch and bending, probbo only needs the back of it moving up a couple of degrees just to bring it away!

Well i done fucked up! I thought i needed the car for Friday so was just guna order one up, no worries. Turns out i need it tomorrow! Luckily my housemates have just got back from climbing Ben Nevis so they have today off. Iv given them their instructions for the day so in theory i should be able to get home and drive it tonight after work. Fingers crossed!

Hi mate

Yeah was a really good day, all the guys up there are really safe aswell!

Yup got a graph outside now, il get some pics up of it in a bit. Thing is that the main issues were fuelling during the mid range so Tom has sorted that for me (hopefully), havnt managed to do a long run to find out for certain. Cos of this, the graph looks fairly similar. It feels a lot lot better though so the graph can go fuck itself 2bh! Just want to drive it now!!!

Hows progress on the saloon? You got a build thread?
