Polo mk2 bread van engine conversion

Featured Replies

Hi everyone i have a 1984 mk2 polo bread van with the 1043cc engine! i wanted to drop the 1.8 8v gti engine out of mk2 golf but was told its hard work to such a conversion!! so then i found my self lookin at the 1.3 engine out of the polo!! as I'm new to the dub scene i haven't got a clue about the tuning capability of the polo!! i would like to see at least 100bhp!! so any advise on the cheapest and the most user friendly way would be very welcome!! i'll be lookin forward to hearing you are feedback.

many thanks

rich.

easiest is possibly a GT engine setup with bike carbs 4-1 manifold. As the car is old you've no real issues with emissions. Get a complete GT engine, you dont need the loom. use the wiring you have

I'm no expert on this but looking on the forum u have a fue options :-

1.3 gt (75bhp stock)(78 with older de cat engine) thats the easyest i have been told as is basicly a straight swap

1.4 16v afh (100bhp stock)little more work but can be done quite easy

1.6 8v (think about 68bhp)cant think what code now (there is 2 options)from the 6n polo or skoda folicia its a ok swap so it seems on here as u can do a little work to them and they have a little more taruqe i beleve

I'm in the prosses of looking to the engine swap and playing with the idea of the gt with a good set of cams ,bike carbs,421 mani ect should be around 80/90 bhp from what i have hured but that should be enugh lol

sorry its a bit vage but

hope this helps

As the car is old you've no real issues with emissions. Get a complete GT engine, you dont need the loom. use the wiring you have already if you wanna go the bike carb route.

Standard these engines are 75BHP when compared to the 40 odd bhp in your 1.05 it'll go like stink!

There are lots of threads on getting more power out of the GT lump, so have a look.

Bonus is, an engine shouldn't really cost more than 200quid (i think) bike carbs, less than 50, if you can make your own manifolds- great otherwise ask someone on here to build some, again less than a 100. so for less that 500quid you'll be looking at around a ton of brake horses.

I take it you have the ability to swap an engine, getting garages to do it will cost lots of money!

cheers

Steve

thanks for the advise guys your very helpfull!! i think the gt lump seems to be the better option and bike carbs sound wicked!! just has it happens i have a set at home off my zxr400r so thats more money saved :-D hopefully once all is done i shall get some pictures up for all of you 2 see!! and i'll be looking forward to attending many shows this summer when my lil bread van is complete!!!!!

thanks again guys!!

Dont overlook the 1.4 8v ABD engine from the MK3 Golf, which also bolts straight in.

Doesn't have such a spicy cam as the GT and the compression ratio is a touch lower, but the extra 119cc is worth having, and my one was a lovely unit with CBR600F carbs.

abd is cheap if nothing else

i had wanted a gt convo , but people are asking hundreds for engines that have stood in the rain for months and bits missing

you can pick up a abd for £30-50 if you look about ...or £100 off ebay if you are lazy

thanks guys, any idea what sort of bhp figure i could expect running a abd with some simple engine mods such as a performance cam, 4branch and bike carbs??
