Pierburg 2e3 Carb on '90 1.3 breadvan

Featured Replies

I've had a search on the forums for info on the 2e3 Pierburg but cant find any, I've found lots of people swearing about it..... and to be quite honest mine does work fine and i dont have any issues with it....

However id like to swap the standard air filter for a K&N i have in the garage. Are there any how to's on the pierburg or even a direct link to any manual downloads even a haynes would do at this point to help me. sorry mods if I've missed an obvious link...

I know most people would suggest i do the usual weber conversion & ditch the pierburg, but i dont have that sort of money at the mo... Just want to improve breathing a little with the k&n i have..

There are other threads out there if your persistent and maybe Google images for pictures of carb.

Have you a mk2 Haynes? it covers the 2e3 carb. heres a pic I have on my photobucket from it..

Someone should do a pierburg guide , they are not bad carbs just more complicated than something like a weber DMTR

are you asking for info on how to fit the k&n ?

should be a matter of unbilting the standard one and bolting up the k&n ...hang on to the old aircleaner for when you get fed up with carb icing

maccaol- cheers for the images, i was hoping somebody might have a PDF copy of the haynes MK2 polo manual to download or a link to it somewhere. I did manage to download a mk2 golf page which covers the 2e3 although the air box is different i think in principle it should be the same. Your right a pierburg guide would be awesome especially as so many people are too quick to ditch it for a simpler weber.

Steveo - The K&N was one of two i had in the garage from my old porsche 914 which ran twin 36 dellortos.... the filters are like new and i can modify the baseplate to fit the pierburg, i was just wondering about the auto choke and other pipes which i may need to block or re-route to fit it, i did a test run last week and it seemed to be ok although when warm tickover was a little lumpy.... need to learn how to adjust and tinker a pierbrug as this is my first. I just wondered if anybody else had swapped a K&N and what they had done to the pierburg if anything....

autochoke isnt hooked up to the airfilter

you should have a approx 1" pipe at the back which is a breather , mines pointed to free air under the car , or you could fit a catch tank

one vac hose from the carb works the hot air flap ..disconect that and block off the nipple on the carb , you can get proper blanking caps or a piece of hose with a screw in it

Brilliant....thats what i had planned on doing, glad i was along the right lines..... Is it worth getting one of these generic induction pipe kits to direct air towards the filter or will it be ok as is...

well yes cold air is better than hot ..not sure you will much gain other than noise over the std aircleaner though

i agree..... probably not any gain...but even 1 extra horse would be a help, whats a standard 1.3 run at.... 55 bhp it could be 56 now...

Mk2 haynes doesn't exist as a PDF, only mk3 which is on here somewhere.

Try going on Club GTI which has good Pierburg info in the Carb section.

just had a look and found this thread......

Pierburg info....

 theres more info than i need but very detailed reading on the 2e2 allbeit for a Golf.

Still relevant, I've currently got a weber carb in bits and might for fun take a spare pierburg I have and strip it. The things that tend to be an issue are lack of idle from the automatic choke, the rubber base perishes and leaks air and things like dirty jets. A strip and re-build might help massively.

Good luck with it.

I don't want to spoil the party but just want to add my comments.

I wouldn't bother with the bolt on filter personally, they cause more hassle than they're worth IMHO.

The sound isn't that great from them and you usually end up with problems with carb icing and over zealous auto choke mechanisms. Plus the fact that the k&N filter modifies the airflow quantity and you will need to re-tweak the idle mixture.

I didn't recognise any significant performance increase with either a pipercross or k&n type so i've stuck with the standard outfit and regularly service it.

:crybaby:

all i wanted was a shiney filter......sob!

i know i think you may be right, it aint broke so i dont suppose i need to fix....itchy modding fingers tho...

Once you've got the car running properly with standard filter then try the K+N filter and see how you get on with it. I remember reading that Gaz on here who knows his stuff didn't have an issue with his and as you say they look good. The weather is either too cold or too hot anyway lol.

Failing that get a golf elbow..

ooooh...now then i like that Golf elbow mod....... I needs me one of those, i do have a spare K&N cone filter i could use in that instance.......

If anybody has a Golf Elbow to fit the 2E3 on my 1.3 let me know and ill buy.....

i will try and take a picture of my pancake K&N & my quick install.
