Got caught speeding, anyone know the penalty?

Featured Replies

Sorry, there have been a few posts like this recently but I think i got caught speeding the other day, it was 100% my fault. It was one of the speed camera/police vans on the side of the dual carriageway (70 limit), and i completely missed it, didn't see it until i was in line with it. My satnav said i was doing 79mph at the time. I'm really, really worried now, lesson learnt :-(

But does anyone know what sort of penalty i will be facing? 3 points and a fine? I currently have a clean license but really worried because i'm only 18 and 6 points = ban.

Is there any chance i might get away with going on one of those speed awareness courses? Since if my satnav was correct, and the fact they allow 10% is correct and not just a rumour i'm 2mph over.

Anyone know from previous experience? I would rather they pulled me over there and then and gave me a right telling off than making me wait up to 2 weeks for it to appear in the post!

Also, only had the car less than a week, v5 has been sent off but not recieved logbook yet so its not technically in my name yet! What happens here? Haha

I think it depends on the police to be honest. A lot of it is up to their discression. But its only likely to be 3 points and a 60quid fine. But dont take my word for that. You will know within 2 weeks anyway!!

i got done doin 46 in a 30 on the opposite side of the road and only got a 80 pound fine and speed awareness course

mind you my mate got done at 36 in a 30 and got 3 points.

Yeh, someone was saying it depends on what catches you. If i got pulled i reckon i could've wriggled out of it, but apparently if its a speed camera van you get offered the course, and if its a police van you get points.

In some places don't they do 10% then 1 or 2mph? Probably just a rumour but sure i've heard it.

Anyway thanks for the advice, philll did you go to court? Anyone recommend that? I know someone who said they would and they never sent him any details, never heard anything since and that was 2 years ago.. Person who got done at the same time (was on mopeds!) just accepted it and got 3 points and had to pay fine! Mind you, don't know what i would say in court, i'm entirely in the wrong, there's no excuse? haha

If u get a £60 quid fine and u send a cheque for £60.01 their computer cant process it and you dont get the points. My mum sent a cheque dated the 31 Feb.Obviously there is no such date. They sent her cheque back asking for another one. She never sent it back and she heard nothing else!! That was at least 3 years ago!!

Fair play mate! Sure theres a few loopholes like that, but is it true about the £60.01? Lol

i didnt have to go to court or anything it was just a fix penalty and i got a choice between point and a fine or speed awarness course (what was more of a joke to most the people in the room)

WTF were you actually doing lol.

i was going alot faster it was like 3am and i completley forgot about the camera so slammed on the anchors and swereved to the other side of the road cos it was quite wide and i thought i wouldnt get done :-(

Generally £60 and 3 points, but some forces will offer a speed awareness course.

That loophole has been closed. Also, you can't use the only remaining loophole (the two week rule) as you have just bought the car, due to the fact that the police have a legitimate reason for taking over two weeks to contact you. Sorry mate, no way out :-(

whats the two week rule lol?

Buy it and let us know how you get on...

How do you know you've been caught..?

Fiver says nothing turns up.

Does anybody stick to 70mph on a proper d/c?? Not that I've ever noticed.

Wouldn't be suprised if you wern't doing more than about 75mph anyway, in which case they would get everybody!

Unless you were doing 90mph+ I wouldn't loose any sleep!

Satnav said 79 whilst going past it, but not sure if i was going faster before  speedo reads about 85-90 when satnav says 80. Although having said that, quite a few people were travelling at the same/similar speed.. it blended in quite well with the surroundings

Thinking about buying those letters.. Says you get a refund if it doesn't work  lol if only someone on here has tried them.. ha

The 2 week rule is something to do with it not turning up within 14 of being caught, although it doesn't apply to me because it will take them longer to find me as the owner seeing as i haven't recieved the logbook back yet.

From what i know mate they will take into consideration your age and previous convictions and will more than likely offer you a fine and the speed awarness course, just cross your fingers mate, or you'll be that guy from the speeding advert! No Job..No Friends..No Life! lol :D

Yeeh i know :-( Fair play. Has anyone seen this? sounds like a blatent scam...?

I'll only loose my job :-D and i know i'm biased, but i'm sure others on here will agree with me, they seem to be more strict on younger drivers.. :x

If you were going the same speed as traffic stop worrying!

There's no way you'd get any more than 3 points even if they do contact you.

na you shoud just get a speed awareness course Jamie because its your first time , everyone i know who has been caught speeding has been offered to go on one. Chillax my brother

A SMACK BOTTOM! you naughty boy!

Nah you should get away with speed awareness, but when i went on mine they said you only get them if you get caught doing 37in 30 or 49 in 40, or something around that, but is differs on the erea you get caught speeding.

I got flashed by a camera doing 40 in a 30, never heard anything from it. I learnt my lesson without having to pay the fine but in those 2 weeks that followed I was nervous. I now know where all the speed cameras in Bath are so know when to hit the brakes.

Just for those who haven't realised, all permanent speed cameras (the ones you want to chop down like a tree) flash but only a small percentage actually have a camera in it. This is because they are really expensive and seeing as people slow down for them regardless they don't really need to fill them all.

However if you drive in the other direction and take a good peer into the camera box, you should be able to see a black round like shape, this is the camera. If you see it you know to slow down when coming back.

They usually rotate the cameras around your county every 2 or 3 days, if you live near one you might see them putting the camera in at around 6/7 in the morning.

Anyways just some info for those that might like to know.

Also, it takes however long for the letter to arrive, can't you just put it in the bin and say you never recieved it? or is it signed for?
