6n2 Dashboard conversion

Featured Replies

Hi,

basically, bought a 6n2 dashboard to put into my late spec 6n. I was wondering what to do with regards to wiring as i've seen it done before but the rev counter does not work.

any help would be great

PM jordan eff mate....hes done this is or is doing this, as I'm sure your aware...he should be able to help.

What are you doing with your standard 6n clocks and interior wiring loom mate??? I'm after the late clocks and also the entire interior loom, to rewire my polo as the wiring has been cut and botched

let me know

as far as getting the dash in is concerned its a case of cutting the 2 brackets off the 6n2 shell that the dash sits on and welding them in place on the 6n, but as for wiring isconcerned "jordan eff" done the dash conversion at the same time as doing the gti engine swap so the looms were all plug and play as far as i know, not to sure what wiring the dash up to the 6n loom ill be like :?

Hey Panda,

You're coming across the canbus issue, this is the reason why I never tried to do the conversion. As i'm sure you are aware, the 6n2 uses a signal system called "CANbus" to maintain the inputs of stuff like speed, rev etc. On the 6n, the system is analogue so when you plug in the 6n2 clocks, the signal is not recognised hence no revometer tacho movement. The idea is this: you have to find an early lupo or polo when they didnt use canbus (this kicked in around 2000) take your 6n2 clocks or if you have a GTi one you will have to disasemble the tacho and replace the rev meter tacho and put it into your clocks. As I never attempted to do the conversion, I can't help much sorry!

will i need to use the 6n2 interior loom still?

You don't need the 6n2 loom I don't think, in theory if you can access the schematics for the 6n2 and 6n then you can simply rewire it (loom colours to colours etc).

sweet, as my car's far from standard wiring wise!

has anyone used the early lupo clocks sucessfully?

not sure how your wiring is set up but it'll be far easier to use the interior/ dash loom from the 6n2.

the coloured plugs match up / plug in to each other but there are a few wires that need swapping, it's easy enough though you can match it to the old 6n interior loom plugs and swap them out using a vw pin removal tool.

to further complicate the wiring, my car runs DTA standalone managment, lol.

the problem is getting the analogue (6n) signal over into the digital (6n2) clocks.

The key to getting the clocks working is to find a set of analogue lupo clocks, these are from the early 1999 models. They are plug and play, however if you want the GTi clocks you'll have to take the tacho apart and remove the internals into the GTi tacho. Its very hard to explain unfortuantly :(

on the hunt for some early 99 lupo clocks. Do these have white faces?

Same as 6n2 mate :)

should have a set by the weekend :)

got this conversion nailed now, standby for pictures.

good work! didn't take you long :D

any chance of a guide once its all in? i really want to do this to mine :ninja:

cheers!

doing a guide would be pointless tbh, my car's a mis match of loads of different ones! the wiring's a mismatch too!

If I can get the correct clocks this weekend, the full conversion will be done by next week.

fair enough! is it any clocks out of a pre 2000 6n2 or lupo then? how much of the 6n2 interior loom have you used (for heaters, lights etc?)

Thanks for any info :)

I will be modifying my 6n loom, rather than swapping out the entire loom as i want to keep my ibiza window switches and open air switches in the centre console

  • 1 year later...

I'm half way through my convertion now.. all heater matrix and blower houses are swapped over to a 6n2.. i have a pre-cut loom that i have to saulder into place of my 6n one and then I'm done..

problem I'm having is this..

tha dashboard fits flush on the passenger side, but wont fit properly on the drivers.. its as if theres something stopping it.. i have removed the polo 6n dash mounts also.. anyone got any ideas?

Seriously old thread revival!

But its where the dash mounts on to the part above the steering wheel rack, basically the bit that sticks out behind the clocks and has i think 2 or 3 studs that are welded onto the shell and you have to bolt the dash onto them, only problem is they stick out further than the 6n2 does so wont sit flush unfortunately

I've been thinking about making a plug in unit or conversion harnes that lets you plug the 6n2 dash straight into your existing connector.

Only problem is as said above the revs don't work. The 6n uses variable voltage to move the rev counter. Ie 1.2v = 1,200 rpm and 3.73v = 3,720 rpm for example.

The 6n2 uses PWM which is a digital signal and uses pulses of low voltage current to measure engine speed (like an abs sensor, almost). This is not such a problem if we could make an analogue to digital converter , but all I need is both readings from the 6n and 6n2

Would anyone happen to know these readings?
