Seem's mad how unsafe 4x4's actually are on the road.. and i hate the fact parents buy them because they think it's safer when they crash.

All they are gunna do is kill anyone they hit instantly... and as of the last test kill themselfs aswell, go them!

maybe they should learn to drive properly on the school run instead of not learning to drive and just buying a massive car to compensate..

Dont mean to stereotype.. i know probably the vast majority dont buy big 4x4's and do drive very safely on the road.. it's just aimed at those silly people that do!

As part of that programme they showed a test where two identical mondeos crashed but one was lowered 50mm, which meant it came off much worse!

It's shocking how the mondeo which was only lowered 2 inches performed when it crashed!

I'd hate to imagine what would happen to a slammed Polo...

With regards to the 4x4's it IS safer for them when they crash. Yeah, the other bloke comes off worse most of the time but since when has the other persons wellbeing been your concern when buying a car to transport your kids?

Aye.. is a fair point.. in the civic test anyways, in the 4x4 vs mpv test the 4x4 comes off a lot worse.

This is kinda my point though.. my consern was how unsafe 4x4's are to other car's.

I do admit, though.. it's fair enough theat people want their kid's to be safer.. i just think the way in which they go about doing it are silly..

especially when you consider the way most 4x4 driver's drive on the road. in my experience they have no consideration for anyone else.

Saw the same thing, I wouldn't mind that they buy it to protect their kids.. but in those crashes it shows the 4x4 crashing into someone else. It's fine to have protection for *other people crashing into you* but to have it so that it will protect you when you *crash into someone else* annoys me quite a bit. It's like they think it is an excuse to drive like a fool.

Read about a lowspeed crash in a lowered Splitscreen bus... because the bumper was lower than should have been, and missed the other car altogether, the very thin front panel and the drivers legs took all the force of the crash. Both legs were lost, that scared me well away from them, at least theres and engine and such to take some of the smaller crashes in a car, not my legs!

Yeh splitties and bays both look perilous in a frontal.. there was some episode of some show I saw where a KA had a head on collision with a bay camper. The woman driving the KA veered across into the Bay's lane.. surprisingly the woman died and the Bay driver survived but I think at least one of his legs did require amputation.

Makes you sick to think that that could happen to even the best of drivers

Na I saw it a few years ago, I think it was on some short BBC series like Road Wars etc but focussing on just road collisions as opposed to all the other things

It only came off worse when smashed into an NCAP 5 star car. So do you reckon people should stop driving them too?

It's a little unfair to say all 4x4 drivers are inconsiderate, it's more like inconsiderate drivers have more chance of driving a 4x4. The best drivers on the road are truckers and the travelling reps. Generally speaking in my experience they understand and anticipate the road better than casual drivers, especially on the motorways. These drivers don't tend to drive 4x4's (truckers obviously) because they are crap for the type of driving they do. School run drivers on the other hand don't drive much at all in general and as a result aren't particularly good at it. It's not inconsiderate it's just crap driving. Much generalisation going on but you get the idea...
